A communication system incorporates a method and a computer program product that provide selecting and camping on primary band in idle mode in preparation for supporting an anticipated data connection for demanding application(s) to a network system. The communication system scans, using a radio frequency (RF) communication subsystem, available network node(s) to assess communication capacity. The communication system identifies a combination of a primary band and secondary band(s) of the available network node(s) that satisfies a communication demand requirement of data throughput, data latency, and/or data quality. The communication system selects and camps on the primary band in preparation for activation of the demanding application(s) and configuring the RF communication subsystem to use the secondary band(s) to operate in carrier aggregation and/or dual connection mode to satisfy the communication demand requirement in preparation for activation of the demanding application(s) and establishment of the data connection.

Primary band selection by a carrier aggregation or dual connect aware communication device

A communication device, method, and computer program product optimize cyclic delay diversity (CDD) or linear delay diversity (LDD) for effective transmit diversity that increases transmit power by first and second transmit chains of the communication device. A controller of the communication device sequentially configures the first transmit chain to transmit an uplink signal and the second transmit chain to transmit the uplink signal with a different phase shift or time delay value. While sequentially transmitting, the controller monitors a measure of uplink signal quality at a network node for each sequentially changed phase shift or time delay values. The controller determines and uses an optimum value for the phase shift or time delay value that results in an optimum uplink signal quality over the evaluated sequence of different phase shift or time delay values.

Device-controlled adaptive delay diversity

A communication device, method, and computer program product provide power efficient transmit diversity using two transmit chains to meet a transmit power level for an uplink signal when one transmit chain is insufficient. In response to determining that the first transmit power level is equal to or less than the transmit power capability of at least one of a first transmit chain and a second transmit chain, the communication device configures a corresponding one of the first transmit chain and the second transmit chain to transmit the uplink channel with at least the first transmit power level.

A controller of the communication system identifies, selects, and camps on a combination of a primary band and at least one secondary band of the one or more available network nodes that satisfies a communication demand requirement for the demanding application(s) using carrier aggregation and/or dual connection in preparation for activation of the demanding application(s) and establishment of the data connection with the communication network.

A communication system, a method, and a computer program product provide selecting and camping on primary band in idle mode in preparation for supporting a data connection for demanding application(s) to a network system. Preparation includes determining a communication demand requirement associated with the at least one application comprising at least one of data throughput greater than a throughput threshold and data latency less than a latency threshold. The communication system identifies, selects, and camps on the primary band in preparation for activation of the at least one application and configures the RF communication subsystem to use the at least one secondary band in preparation for activation of the at least one application and for establishment of the data connection with the communication network to operate in at least one of carrier aggregation mode and dual connection mode to satisfy a communication demand requirement.

User communication system that determines carrier aggregation or dual connect communication demand requirement for primary band selection

A communication device, method and computer program product provide efficient average power tracking (APT) powering of transmit power amplifiers with fewer switching mode power supplies (SMPSs) to reduce size and cost of the communication device. A controller of the communication device detects an output voltage level of a battery supply of a communication device power amplifiers (PAs) assignable to respective transmit uplinks. The communication device includes a smaller second number of switching mode power supplies (SMPSs). The communication device includes linear regulator(s) that are powered by one of (i) output voltage of the battery supply and (ii) one of the one or more SMPSs. Controller selects a combination of SMPSs and linear regulators to power active PAs. The controller determines APT supply voltage value for each PAs and assigns the SMPS(s) and the linear regulator(s) to the PAs to achieve a highest overall or combined system power efficiency.

Communication device having power amplification for multiple transmit uplinks

An electronic device includes a multiple input, multiple output (MIMO) antenna array comprising a plurality of antenna elements configured for MIMO communication across a network. One or more sensors detect a triggering event altering a radiation correlation pattern between at least two antenna elements of the plurality of antenna elements. One or more processors then select, in response to the one or more sensors detecting the triggering event, a quantity of antenna elements from the plurality of antenna elements available for engagement in the MIMO communication across the network as a function of the radiation correlation pattern.

Dynamic selection and usage of MIMO antenna elements in an electronic device as a function of correlation patterns

A communication device, method, and computer program product reduce power consumption when one or more transmit chains can be inactivated without unsatisfactory uplink communication quality in single data layer transmit diversity (TxDiv) or multiple input multiple output (MIMO) mode. The communication device monitors uplink signal quality of the uplink data stream while connected in single layer mode to a base node using multiple transmit chains. The controller device deactivates transmit chain(s) while the uplink signal quality remains satisfactory. The controller re-activates the inactivated transmit chain(s) in response to the uplink signal quality becoming unsatisfactory.

Device-controlled transmit chain configuration for high power modes

A communication device, computer program product, and method proactively implement a successful transmit antenna configuration to address antenna outages for multiple transmit carrier scenarios. A carrier of the communication device determines a first transmit carrier, of at least two transmit carriers of a multiple transmit carrier mode, that is identified as having priority among the at least two transmit carriers. The controller identifies one or more transmit antenna configurations in the transmit antenna configuration data that support the first transmit carrier. The carrier determining, for each transmit antenna configuration, an aggregate antenna outage metric that indicates the transmit performance for a corresponding transmit antenna configuration. The controller configures an antenna switching network and RF frontend of a communication subsystem of the communication device with a first transmit antenna configuration that has a better aggregate antenna outage metric than other antenna configurations.

Further, network communications are adapted to optimize wireless communication with a wireless device in different physical configurations of the wireless device. The described techniques, for instance, optimize performance in different frequency bands based on changes in device configuration between open positions and folded positions.
