The invention provides pellet for use as a core for a pharmaceutical dosage form having an inner and an outer zone where the inner zone includes a biologically active agent and said outer zone includes a layer formed by applying a substantially dry, free flowing inert powder which forms a non-tacky surface when placed in contact with water. The invention also provides a process for making pharmaceutical pellets where the core or at least one a layer on the core is formed by (a) contacting powder particles, adhering them to each other and compacting the adhered pellets by a rolling movement, wherein the degree of densification is controlled by the rolling movement; and (b) feeding a sufficient amount of a substantially dry, free flowing inert powder which forms a non-tacky surface when placed in contact with water to provide on said particles an outer zone including a layer formed from said substantially dry, free flowing inert powder.

Method of preparing biologically active formulations

The invention relates to a flowable fibrin adhesive granulate containing thrombin, Factor XIII, fibrinogen, and a calcium salt in the form of granules with a particle size of more than 50 &#x3bc;m to 1000 &#x3bc;m. Said granulate is useful for the healing of wounds in surgery, tissue therapy and/or as supporting material for biological factors. The invention also relates to an effervescent granulate and an effervescent powder for producing a foam that is suitable for hemostasis. The invention further relates to preparations to arrest bleeding containing a non-woven fabric for wounds consisting of a biodegradable supporting material that is coated with a fibrin glue granulate mixture or mixed granulate.

Fibrin adhesive granulate and method for its preparation

A solid formulation of a fibrin tissue adhesive for use in medical procedures is disclosed. The formulation is a mixture containing thrombin and fibrinogen with factor XIII in a pourable solid granule form. The granules are obtained by drying the protein solutions or suspensions in a fluidized bed apparatus. Preferably, the granules have a particle size between 20 and 1,000 um.

A method and a device function for monitoring and/or controlling and regulating a granulation, agglomeration, instantization, coating and drying process in a fluidized layer or a moving bulk by determining the product moisture. At least during one process segment the total product moisture is measured substantially continuously over a period of seconds, in a contact-free manner using electromagnetic radiation in the high frequency or microwave range, by evaluation of the attenuation of the radiation as a measure of this total product moisture. Taking into account the product temperature, the measurement result is used to hold the total product moisture in a pre-determined range via a control circuit by changing the spray rate and/or the gas temperature and/or the volume flow.
