The invention creates a method for enabling a terminal to determine an activated memory configuration of a storage medium that can be operated in the terminal. For this purpose an interruption and subsequent restoration of the contact existing at an interface of the storage medium between the storage medium and the terminal is&#x2014;at least partly&#x2014;simulated, wherein upon the simulation of the restoration or interruption of the contact the terminal is caused to determine the activated memory configuration of the storage medium.

Method for announcing a memory configuration

A portable data carrier () includes a non-volatile memory (), a processor () and a watermark application () executable by the processor () which is also stored on the data carrier (). The watermark application () is configured to check () data () stored on the data carrier () or data intended to be stored on the data carrier () as to the presence of a digital watermark, or to mark () such data () with a digital watermark. The invention provides a portable memory medium with a memory area and a memory management system for managing the memory area, wherein different options for access to the memory area are provided.
