A compound of formula (I) ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 each represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group, Z represents a ring selected from: ##STR2## in which n represents 4, 5 or 6; ##STR3## in which R.sup.3 represents hydrogen or an alkyl group and R.sup.4 represents an alkyl, methoxy benzyl or R.sup.5 NHCO group, R.sup.5 being an alkyl group; and ##STR4## in which R.sup.6 represents an alkyl group. and pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof are useful in the treatment of migraine and other conditions. They are prepares by decarboxylation of the corresponding indolyl 2-carboxylic acid.

Compounds of the general formula I: ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 represents a thienyl group, or a phenyl group optionally substituted by a halogen (preferably fluorine or chlorine) atom, a lower alkoxy or lower alkyl group, R.sup.2 represents a hydrogen or halogen (preferably fluorine) atom, a lower alkoxy or lower alkyl group, R.sup.3 represents a hydrogen or halogen (preferably fluorine) atom, a lower alkylthio, lower alkoxy or lower alkyl group, or a cycloalkyl group containing 5 or 6 carbon atoms, or a group of the general formula: ##STR2## wherein R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 singly each represents a hydrogen atom or lower alkyl group, R.sup.6 represents a cycloalkyl, hydroxymethyl, carboxy or lower alkoxycarbonyl group, and W represents a carbonyl ##STR3## or a hydroxymethylene [viz. --CH(OH)--] group, and pharmacologically acceptable salts thereof possess potent selective Histamine H.sub.1 -receptor blocking and calcium antagonist properties and are of interest in the treatment of a variety of respiratory, allergenic and cardiovascular disease states. The new compounds can be prepared by various methods based on the condensation of .alpha.-substituted benzyl halides with N-(benzoylpropyl or phenyl-hydroxypropyl)-4-hydroxy piperidines or condensation of di-substituted-methoxy-piperidines with a benzoylpropyl halide or a phenyl-hydroxypropyl-halide followed, where necessary, by removal of protecting groups.

The invention relates to aromatic amides N-substituted by heterocyclic groups. More particularly, the invention relates to substituted benzoic acid amides of 1-arylalkylamino or aminoalkyl-N-heterocyclic rings and to pharmaceutical compositions thereof, which have the ability to antagonize the effects of dopamine or dopaminergic agents of endogenous or exogenous origin and which may be used for the treatment of nausea and vomiting resulting from gastrointestinal disorders, congestive heart failure, post operative conditions, etc., other gastrointestinal disorders such as dyspepsia, flatulence, bile regurgitations, hiatus hernia, peptic ulcer, reflux aerophagitis, gastritis, duodenitis, and cholethiasis, and a variety of conditions affecting the central nervous system such as acute and chronic psychoses, maniacal psychosis, schizophrenias, serious disturbances of behavior and non-melancholic depressive state and migraine.
