Cleansing-scavenging means and method are disclosed for removing detritus from the inner surface of the neck of a cathode ray tube during manufacture. The means comprises probe means for insertion into the neck, and scrubbing means extending from the probe means for dislodging detritus. An expansible and contractible scavenging member is attached to a first end of the probe means. The member has a peripheral surface conformable to the inner surface of the neck for exerting, when expanded, outward scavenging pressure against the inner surface of the neck. Handle means are attached to the second end of the probe means for manipulating the probe means, with associated means providing for expanding and contracting the scavenging member. After the detritus is dislodged from the inner surface of the neck by the scrubbing means, and as the probe means is withdrawn from the neck, the scavenging member when expanded scavenges the detritus from the neck.

Cathode ray tube neck cleansing-scavenging means and method

An axially compact and highly arc protective base-socket system for use with a color television picture tube having a narrow neck terminated by a cylindrical coaxial tubulation. The tubulation is surrounded by a number of axially extending electrically conductive low-voltage pins and at least one high voltage pin. The base-socket system comprises a base and a socket. The base fits over and is secured to the tubulation and passes the pins extending from the neck of the tube. The base comprises: a plurality of axially and radially outwardly extending insulating walls, the low voltage pins lying between the walls; means defining an axially extending deep narrow cavity which receives the high voltage pin, the cavity having a depth at least twice as great as the largest transverse dimension thereof; and a cavity lip surrounding the mouth of the cavity. The socket comprises: an annular support means defining a series of axially and radially inwardly extending channels for mating with the insulating walls on the base to unambiguously orient the base relative to the socket; a series of contacts on the annular support means for establishing electrical connection with the plurality of low-voltage pins on the base when the base is inserted into the socket; an axially extending socket protrusion for mating with the axially extending deep narrow cavity; a high voltage contact in the socket protrusion for establishing electrical connection with the high voltage pin on the base when the base is inserted into the socket; a cap having an annular arc-path-length-extending flange which externally telescopes over the cavity lip. When the base and socket are connected the mating of the socket protrusion and flange with the base cavity and lip form multiply folded extended arc path lengths providing a very high degree of arc prevention in an axially compact system.

This disclosure depicts a method of spot-knocking an electron gun having a heater and cathode, a control grid G1, a screen grid G2, and four main focus lens electrodes (G3, G4, G5, and G6), wherein a first relatively large gap exists between G2 and G3, between G3 and G4, between G4 and G5, and between G5 and G6, and a second relatively small gap exists between G1 and G2, and a third relatively very small gap exists between G1 and the cathode. The method of this invention involves: establishing the heater and cathode and, the G1 and G2 grids and the G3, G4 and G5 electrodes at substantially ground potential; applying a first fluctuating DC voltage to electrode G6 of a magnitude and for a time effective to cause arcs to occur between portions of the electrodes G5 and G6 so as to remove any particles of metal or contaminants on the electrodes; whereby the grounding of the heater and cathode, the G1 and G2 grids and the G3, G4 and G5 electrodes protects the heater and cathode, and the G1 and G2 grids from arcs caused by the first fluctuating DC voltage; establishing the heater and cathode, the G1 and G2 grids and the G4 electrode at substantially ground potential; applying a second fluctuating DC voltage with an amplitude less than the first fluctuating DC voltage, to electrodes G3, G5 and G6, of a magnitude and for a time effective to cause arcs to occur between portions of the electrodes G4 and G5, between portions of the electrodes G4 and G3, and between portions of the electrodes G2 and G3 so as to remove any sharp particles of metal or contaminants on portions of the G2, G3, G4 and G5 electrodes; whereby the grounding of the heater and cathode and the grounding of the G1 and G2 grids protects the heater and cathode from arcs caused by the second fluctuating DC voltage.

Method of spot-knocking an electron gun assembly in a color television

This disclosure depicts a means for energizing a color television cathode ray tube during manufacture. In particular, this means for energizing a color television picture tube is for use with a tube having an envelope containing an electron gun assembly and a base attached to a neck of the envelope. The base has electrically conductive pins connected to elements of the electron gun assembly wherein a first of the pins on the base carries a relatively high focus potential of many kilovolts and a second of the pins carries a substantially higher main focus lens potential. The means for energizing the tube during the manufacture comprises a socket for coupling with the base on the tube wherein the socket has a lead attached to a source of high potential, the lead being characterized by having a switch. The switch has an electrically nonconductive casing filled with a dielectric fluid. An electrically conductive contact plate within the electrically nonconductive casing is connected to the socket by a first wire; and an electrically conductive chain within the electrically nonconductive casing has a first end connected to the high potential source by a second wire. The second end of the chain is free within the electrically nonconductive casing, and the chain is sufficiently long to contact the contact plate. The chain contacts the contact plate when the casing is in a first position wherein the socket is coupled to the base. A means is provided for supporting the switch in an inverted position after the socket is decoupled from the tube. This causes the chain to fall away from the contact plate and thus de-energize the socket.
