Provided are a tape guide roller and tape drive having a guide roller having magnets and bushings to stabilize a roller barrel for a tape medium. The tape guide roller has a roller barrel extending around a vertical axis. The tape medium passes across the roller barrel to guide the tape medium on a tape path. A plurality of magnets positioned with respect to the vertical axis provide an axial force to stabilize the tape guide roller axially.

An apparatus, according to one embodiment, includes: a support plate, a stator, a rotor sub-assembly, and at least one isolation mount coupled between the support plate and the stator. The isolation mount is for reducing transfer of vibration from the stator to the support plate. Moreover, the stator is coplanar with the support plate. The rotor sub-assembly includes a magnet, and a hub rotatably fixed relative to the magnet. The rotor sub-assembly is also configured to rotate relative to the support plate and the stator. Attenuating reaction forces caused by externally supported stators in brushless DC motors

An apparatus, according to one embodiment, includes: a support plate, a stator, and a stator support arm. The stator support arm has a first end that is coupled to the support plate, and extends from the support plate to the stator. Moreover, the stator is coplanar with the support plate. The apparatus further includes at least one isolation mount, and a rotor sub-assembly. The isolation mount is coupled between a second end of the stator support arm and the stator for reducing transfer of vibration from the stator to the stator support arm. The rotor sub-assembly includes a magnet, and a hub rotatably fixed relative to the magnet. Furthermore, the rotor sub-assembly is configured to rotate relative to the support plate and the stator. An apparatus according to one embodiment includes a reel having a hub, and a damping layer coupled to the reel for translating motion of a motor to the reel. The damping layer is physically configured to dampen motor-induced motion of the reel along an axis of rotation of the reel. An apparatus according to another embodiment includes a reel having a hub, and a damping layer coupled to the reel for translating motion of a motor to the reel. The damping layer includes a laminate having a first metal layer and a viscoelastic layer extending along the first metal layer for dampening motor-induced motion of the reel along an axis of rotation of the reel.

Controlling the position of a head within a tape transport system. A track-follow control system (TFCS) includes a controller device for generating a control signal as a function of a position error signal (PES), wherein the PES indicates a difference between the actual and target positions of the head relative to the tape, and an actuator for changing the actual position. The TFCS is adapted to select a controller device configuration from a plurality of configurations dependent on an operating tape speed. The configurations are predetermined depending on a vibration frequency domain profile indicative of environmental vibrations induced to the head and tape to determine the control signal for adjusting an actuator output signal relative to a lateral tape motion signal. The TFCS is also adapted to feed-back a signal depending on a difference of the actuator output signal and the lateral tape motion signal to generate the PES.

Device and method for controlling the position of a head relative to a tape within a tape transport system

Tape media life is increased by dynamically controlling a turn around point (TAP) on the tape media for either an end of a tape wrap or a directional change from a first longitudinal position tape section to a second longitudinal position tape section for reducing damage to the tape media caused by debris by monitoring the TAP for all tape media motion and adjusting tape deceleration for maintaining the TAP to be located at the second longitudinal position tape section.

In one embodiment, a tape movement constraint comprises a tiltable tape roller bearing having a grooved surface adapted to contact and engage a surface of the tape as the roller barrel rotates. An actuator adapted to pivot the roller bearing surface controls the lateral position of a tape. In operation, in one embodiment, the roller barrel of the roller bearing is rotated by engaging a surface of the tape roller barrel with a longitudinally moving magnetic tape. At least a portion of any air bearing between the moving tape and the barrel surface is quenched using grooves formed in the barrel surface. The lateral position of the moving tape is sensed and the rotating roller barrel is tilted in response to the sensed lateral position of the moving tape to control the lateral position of the moving tape. Friction engaged tilting roller bearing tape guidance

A tape movement constraint for a tape drive system, comprises a tiltable tape roller bearing having a grooved surface adapted to contact and engage a surface of the tape as the roller barrel rotates, and an actuator adapted to pivot the roller bearing surface when the actuator is actuated, to control the lateral position of a tape. In operation, in one embodiment, a roller barrel of the tiltable roller bearing is biased in a first position on a pivot axis, using magnetic attraction between a movable magnet and a return path structure of magnetically permeable material. The roller barrel is pivoted on the pivot axis by conducting current through a fixed coil to generate a magnetic field which is conducted by the return path structure to interact with the magnetic field of the magnet. The roller barrel is pivoted on the pivot axis by conducting current through a fixed coil to generate a magnetic field which is conducted by the return path structure to interact with the magnetic field of the magnet.
