A method for transmitting a communication generated by an originating device to a target device using a repeating device is provided. In the method the communication is transmitted from the originating device and received at the repeating device. A repeater request sequence is transmitted from the originating device and retransmitted from the first repeating device to the target device before the repeater request sequence is received at the first repeating device.

Fast access asynchronous repeater wakeup protocol

A radio system for locating a radio transceiver configured to exchange voice or data with a plurality of base stations on a narrowband channel is described. The system includes the radio transceiver that exchanges voice or data on the narrowband channel with a base station of the plurality of base stations and also to periodically transmit a chirp signal to the plurality of base stations. The radio system also includes the plurality of base stations each with a matched filter configured to receive the periodically transmitted chirp signal and to triangulate a location of the radio transceiver using the received chirp signal.

Method and apparatus for locating a transceiver

Methods of enabling late entry into an on-going spread spectrum call are described. A late join frame replaces, and has the same size as, a traffic frame. A late join slot in the late join frame contains sufficient information in preamble and sync subframes to permit a target to join the call. The traffic slots in the late join frame replicate data such that call quality of the call is substantially unaffected if one of the remaining traffic frames is not received. The preamble and sync subframes frequencies may be the same as, or different from, preamble and sync frames frequencies during a call establishment phase of the call. If different, the preamble and sync subframes frequencies are selected from one or more frequencies. Use of the preamble and sync subframes frequencies is compensated for when selecting the traffic slot frequencies to obtain uniform utilization of the spectrum.

Method to facilitate late joining of a call

A frequency generation unit (FGU) in a communication device includes a voltage controlled oscillator (VCO), an adjustable filter having a capacitive element for wideband operation, a current source with variable gain, and chirp generation control circuitry (CGC) that is used to generate location signals. The FGU receives, from a reference device, at least one location signal control parameter that defines linear frequency slope characteristics for a location signal. The CGC configures, based on the at least one location signal control parameter, the gain and a polarity of the current source to generate a first current during a first time period for charging the capacitive element to generate a control signal that is coupled to the VCO to generate a first part of the location signal having the defined linear frequency slope characteristics, wherein the first part of the location signal is transmitted using a transceiver of the communication device.

Method and device for generating a location signal

A reference device determines its distance from a communication device by first using a training process to determine a calibrated time delay for the communication device when the communication device is at a known distance from the reference device. The calibrated time delay is a steady state internal processing delay for the communication device. Subsequently, when the reference device is at an unknown distance from the communication device, the reference device determines the unknown distance using the previously determined calibrated time delay along with a measured signal travel time at the unknown distance.

Method and apparatus for determining location of a communication device

A communication device uses its FGU to generate a location signal that can be used by a reference device to calibrate the communication device and to determine the distance of the communication device from the reference device. The communication device: receives, from a reference device, at least one location signal control parameter that defines pulse shape characteristics for a location signal; configures its FGU based on the at least one location signal control parameter; generates a linear first part of a phase-incoherent location signal having the defined pulse shape characteristics by progressively sweeping an output of the FGU over a range of frequencies from a first frequency to a second frequency within a first time period; and transmits at least one iteration of the first part of the location signal.

Method for generating a location signal

A frequency synthesizer includes: a frequency source generating a reference signal that includes a plurality of pulses having periodicity based on a reference frequency; a feedback loop that includes, a phase detector circuit, a loop filter, a controlled oscillator that generates an output signal at an output, and a loop divide circuit; a non-linear circuit element at an input of the phase detector circuit, which generates intermodulation distortion that causes at least one spurious signal at the output; and a controller controlling the loop divide circuit and the non-linear circuit element. The frequency synthesizer further includes a dither circuit that adjusts the timing of some of the pulses of the reference signal based on a parameter provided by the controller to the non-linear circuit element, thereby, providing a jittered reference signal to the non-linear circuit element for attenuating the at least one spurious signal at the output.

Method and apparatus for spur reduction in a frequency synthesizer

A frequency generation unit (FGU)includes a plurality of selectable voltage controlled oscillators () whose output frequencies are chosen in relationship with a predetermined intermediate frequency (IF) and frequency divider value (M) to provide multi-band frequency generation capability in a single communication device. A programmable reference divider (), phase detector () and programmable charge pump () take an incoming reference frequency () and generate a charge pump output () to optimize the in-band phase noise in the FGU. A fixed loop filter () filters the charge pump output () to generate a control voltage () for the selectable VCOs (). The desired frequency band is selected and enabled using control logic ().

Multi-band frequency generation method and apparatus

A system and method for reducing the transient responses in a phase lock loop (PLL) () with variable oscillator gain is disclosed. The system includes a charge pump () having an adapt mode and a normal mode of operation. The charge pump () also includes controlled trickle currents from current sources (), () which are applied to the output (), () of charge pump () to minimize the transient responses of the PLL (). A programmable delay is provided in the charge pump () and is configured using a controller () based on the variable oscillator gain for the PLL (). The configured programmable delay is used in the adapt mode of operation for adding a trickle current from the current source () to the adapt mode output ().

A system and method for reducing a transient response in a phase lock loop (PLL) () is disclosed. The system includes an adapt mode charge pump (), a normal mode charge pump () and the use of controlled trickle currents (), () applied to those charge pumps to minimize a transient response of the PLL ().

System and method for reducing transient response in a fractional N phase lock loop

A frequency multiplier (120) having a tunable resonant circuit (122), is anticipated for use with a frequency synthesizer (100) having a Voltage Controlled Oscillator (110). The VCO control line (116) voltage establishes the VCO (110) fundamental frequency (.function.o) as well as the resonant circuit (122) center frequency, such that the resonant circuit (122) frequency response will track a desired harmonic component within the multiplier output (130) even as the VCO control line (116) voltage and the fundamental frequency (.function.o) change in response to control line variation.

A frequency multiplier (120) having a tunable resonant circuit (122), is anticipated for use with a frequency synthesizer (100) having a Voltage Controlled Oscillator (110). The VCO control line (116) voltage establishes the VCO (110) fundamental frequency (.function..sub.o) as well as the resonant circuit (122) center frequency, such that the resonant circuit (122) frequency response will track a desired harmonic component within the multiplier output (130) even as the VCO control line (116) voltage and the fundamental frequency (.function..sub.o) change in response to control line variation.

A radio having two architectural platforms integrated in one integrated circuit (IC). A synthesizer controller (312) selects between an offset local oscillator (LO) synthesizer (318) and a second LO synthesizer (316) to provide a common architecture for either an Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) or Time Division Duplex (TDD) system design while providing isolation between the two frequency sources. An offset LO signal (319) is translated to an isolated LO signal 310 and combined with a main LO signal (322) to provide the FDD platform. A second LO signal (314) is translated into the isolated LO signal 310 and combined with the main LO signal (322) to provide the TDD platform. The second LO synthesizer signal (314) is common to both systems in the receive mode.
