Tris(4-substitutedureidomethyl)phosphine oxides were prepared by the reaction of tris(hydroxymethyl)phosphine with substituted ureas. The phosphine oxides were used to impart flame retardancy to cellulosic materials. They were effective as flame retardants either alone or in combination with hydroxymethylphosphorus compounds or hydroxymethylnitrogen compounds.

Soluble adduct polymers were allowed to react with phenol, alkyl substituted phenols or halogen substituted phenols which contain one or more hydrogens ortho or para to the phenolic hydroxyl group to (a) prepare flame resistant polymers and (b) prepare flame-, glow-, wrinkle- and shrink-resistant woven and knit textiles which contain 25% or more cellulosic fibers.

Flameproofing resins for organic textiles from adduct polymers

2-Thia-1,3,5-triaza-7-phosphaadamantane 2,2-dioxide was prepared. The phosphine was converted to the phosphine oxide derivative by reaction with hydrogen peroxide and the methyl phosphonium iodide derivative of the phosphene was prepared by reaction with methyl iodide.

Hexamethyl phosphorous triamide is reacted with cotton cellulose, thereby imparting flame retardancy and cationexchange properties to the cellulose.
