Hydrogen sulfide issuing from an oil shale retort is captured in an absorbent bed. When the bed is regenerated as with oxygen containing gas, the sulfur dioxide liberated is reintroduced into the retort for reaction with the spent shale.

Retorting process with contaminant removal

One or more sorbent bases selected from the group consisting of the alkali and alkaline earth metal oxides, hydoxides, carbonates and bicarbonates are treated with at least one organic halide of the general formula R--X.sub.n where R is an organic radical containing from 1 to about 12 carbon atoms, X is a halogen atom and n has a value from 1 to about 10 to form a sorbent suitable for removing acidic substances from gas mixtures.

Sorbent bases treated with organic halides and their use to remove

Acetylenic compounds are selectively removed from hydrocarbon mixtures containing same by oxidation in the presence of a solid copper-manganese-oxygen catalyst. In one embodiment, acetylenic compounds are selectively removed from a conjugated diene mixture containing same by contacting oxygen and a mixture with a copper manganite catalyst under oxidizing conditions.
