Increased video playback framerate in low bit-rate video applications

Interpolation of a new frame between a previous frame and a current frame of a video stream by motion compensated frame rate upsampling. The interpolation method includes identifying nodes and edges of objects such as triangles present in the previous frame, constructing a superimposed triangular mesh based on the identified nodes and edges, estimating displacement such nodes in the superimposed triangular mesh from the previous frame with respect to the current frame, and rendering the new frame based on the estimated displacement of nodes. Additionally, pixels of the previous frame and the current frame may be classified according to whether a pixel's value has changed from the previous frame to the current frame. This classification may be used during rendering to reduce overall processing time. Pixel-based forward motion estimation may be used to estimate motion of pixels between the previous frame and the current frame and the estimated motion may be used in estimating node displacement.

Method for motion compensated frame rate upsampling based on piecewise affine warping

Synthesizing of video frames that have been dropped by a video encoder is achieved by interpolating between decoded frames at a decoder. The method consists of successive refinement stages that increase in computational complexity. Starting with a spatio-temporal median filtering approach, each stage uses information that improves the quality of the interpolated frames, such as bit stream motion information, decoder-based motion estimation and motion-based state segmentation of regions. By using more computational resources, each of these stages results in an improved quality of interpolated video. The motion compensation techniques are based on block-based motion estimation of the kind used by block-transform based video encoders. More accurate motion estimates are obtained by using a combination of forward and backward block motion estimation. The method is further extended by incorporating global/local motion estimation based on the segmentation information, and employing image warping techniques to compensate for motion resulting from deformations.

Method and apparatus for increasing video frame rate

A method and apparatus for providing accurate, real-time monitoring of image compression processing. Video data is compressed by a microprocessor running a video compression algorithm. A product of this compression process is a decompressed (i.e., companded) image to be used in the compression of the next video image. This companded image is also used by the video capture system for display for real-time monitoring of video compression processing. In a preferred embodiment, every video frame that is compressed, is also displayed in real-time on a display monitor.

Method and apparatus for monitoring video compression processing

At least one region of each video frame is designated for intra encoding. One or more regions of each video frame are designated for inter encoding. One or more motion vectors are selected for each region designated for inter encoding, wherein at least one motion vector is a non-zero motion vector. The plurality of video frames are encoded in accordance with the designation of regions for intra encoding, the designation of regions for inter encoding, and the selection of motion vectors, wherein the designation of regions for intra encoding and the selection of motion vectors are adapted to ensure error recovery during decoding of the encoded video frames.
