An accommodating IOL comprises an optic adapted to focus light toward a retina of an eye, and a movement assembly coupled to the eye to provide effective accommodating movement, preferably axial movement, of the optic. At least a portion of the movement assembly is made from a material that is less stiff and/or more resilient than the material used to make the optic. Optionally, an outer ring or support portion made at least partially from either a relatively stiff material such as the material used in the optic or a relatively resilient material such as the material used in the movement assembly is also provided.

Accommodating intraocular lens and method of manufacture thereof

The present invention addresses the treatment of ocular conditions by the enhancement of lens regeneration. This is accomplished by the administration of a high viscosity composition including a hyaluronic acid compound. Excess high viscosity composition may be removed by focal laser photophacoablation. Additionally, a collagen product may be injected within the lens capsule to improve lens cell proliferation and differentiation, and to improve the configuration, shape and structure of regenerated lenses. Various embodiments involving the enhancement of lens regeneration are described. For example, lens regeneration may be enhanced by filling the lens capsule bag with the inventive hyaluronic acid compound; by inserting at least one collagen patch in the lens capsule; and/or by injecting a collagen-based product into the lens capsule.

Hyaluronic acid in the enhancement of lens regeneration

An intraocular lens for insertion into the capsular bag of an eye contains an optic, an outer periphery, and an outer support structure. The optic has a periphery and centered about an optical axis. The outer periphery is disposed about the optic and configured to engage an equatorial region of the capsular bag of an eye. The outer support structure is disposed along the periphery and spaced from the optic with voids outer support structure and the optic. The intraocular lens further comprises a first intermediate member and a weakened region disposed along the outer periphery between the outer support structure and the first intermediate member. The first intermediate member operably couples the optic and the outer support structure. The weakened region is attached to, and configured to provide relative motion between, the outer support structure and the first intermediate member in response to the ciliary muscle of the eye.

The present invention addresses the treatment of ocular conditions by the enhancement of lens regeneration. Enhancement of lens regeneration is accomplished by the administration of a composition comprising a polysiloxane polymer having functional acryl groups useful in the preparation of intraocular lenses (IOLs).

Enhancement of lens regeneration using materials comprising polysiloxane polymers

An intraocular lens (IOL) for insertion in a capsular bag of an eye includes an optic for focusing light and a movement assembly coupled to the optic. The movement assembly is adapted to cooperate with the capsular bag to effect accommodating movement of the optic. The movement assembly includes one or more elongated fixation members coupled to a periphery of the optic and adapted to convert radial movement of the capsular bag to axial movement of the optic. The fixation members extend spirally at least half-way around the optic. Angled transition sections may be provided between each fixation member and the optic periphery. The anterior and posterior edges of the optic periphery may have relatively sharp angles to reduce epithelial cell growth.

Accommodating intraocular lens with elongated suspension structure

A method for treating an ocular condition in a mammal includes removing an original lens to leave an empty lens capsule, filling the empty lens capsule with a gas to maintain capsule tension and prevent folding of the empty lens capsule, disposing a substance into said empty lens capsule that providing an internal scaffold for proliferation and differentiation of lens fibers; and selectively removing said substance by laser photoablation.

Controlled ocular lens regeneration

The present invention addresses the treatment of ocular conditions by the enhancement of lens regeneration. This is accomplished by the administration of a high viscosity composition including a hyaluronic acid compound and laser photoablation. Excess high viscosity composition may be removed by focal laser photophacoablation. An intraocular lens for implantation in an eye of a patient includes a multifocal optic and a movement assembly. The optic has maximum add power which is less than the add power required for full near vision for a pseudophakic eye. The movement assembly is coupled to the optic and is adapted to cooperate with the eye of the patient to effect accommodating movement of the optic in the eye. Lens systems including two optics and two movement assemblies are also provided. The intraocular lenses and lens systems are particularly useful when implanted in the eyes of a patient after removal of the natural lenses.

Accommodating, reduced ADD power multifocal intraocular lenses

An intraocular lens configured to be implanted in the cornea from the posterior aspect. The lens has an optic and a pair fixation members extending outward therefrom. One of the fixation members includes a single enlarged foot, while the other fixation member has two bifurcated feet. The fixation members are sized and shaped to fix within tunnels formed in the cornea. A method of the invention includes forming tunnels in the stroma layer of the cornea, and positioning the fixation members in the tunnels. The tunnels may be formed from outside or inside the cornea. The method may include inserting the folded intraocular lens into the anterior chamber, permitting the lens to unfold, inserting the fixation member with the enlarged foot in one of the tunnels, and bending the two bifurcated feet of the other fixation member together so as to fit within the other tunnel.

Cholinergic agents in the treatment of presbyopia

A method for the laser photoablation of ocular lens tissue comprises the steps of determining a volume of the lens tissue to be photoablated and directing a pulsed, infrared laser beam at the volume with an amount of energy effective for photoablating the determined region without causing substantial damage to surrounding tissue regions. The laser beam is initially directed at a focal point below an anterior surface of the ocular lens and such focal point is moved towards the ocular lens anterior surface in order to ablate the determined volume. The laser is preferably an Nd:YLF laser operating at a frequency of about 1053 nanometers and a pulse repetition rate of about 1000 Hertz with a pulse width of about 60 picoseconds. Each pulse has an energy of about 30 microjoules. The laser operates with a focused beam diameter of about 20 microns and operates with a &ldquo;zone of effect&rdquo; of no greater than about 50 microns. The method provides for the correction of myopia, hyperopia or presbyopia and enables the removal of incipient cataract.
