A midboard cable connector assembly with a board connector and a cable connector. The board connector has terminals precisely positioned with respect to engagement features. A cable connector likewise has terminals precisely positioned with respect to complementary engagement features. When the connectors are pressed together for mating, the terminals of one or both connectors deform, generating a force that separates the connectors until the engagement features engage and block further backward motion. As the mating position is defined by the locations of the engagement features, the connectors can be designed with low over travel and a resulting short stub length, which promotes high frequency performance. High frequency performance is further promoted by a ground conductor interconnecting the beams forming mating contact portions of ground terminals, reducing the length of unconnected segments and by a cable clamp plate with complaint compression features that reduce distortion of the cables.

High frequency midboard connector

An I/O connector assembly configured for making a cabled connection to an interior portion of a printed circuit board for signals passing through the connector. The assembly may include a receptacle connector, a cage and cables, terminated to conductive elements of the terminal subassemblies, extending through the cage to the midboard. The terminal subassemblies may have first type conductive elements configured for mounting to the printed circuit board and second type conductive elements configured for terminating cables. Features may be included for precise positioning of the receptacle connector formed with the terminal subassemblies relative to the cage such that connector to connector variation in the positioning of the contact portions of the conductive elements in the terminal subassembly is provided. A mating plug may be designed with low wipe, which improves high frequency performance of the mated connector system.

I/O connector configured for cable connection to a midboard

An I/O connector assembly configured for making a cabled connection to an interior portion of a printed circuit board for at least some signals passing through the I/O connector. The I/O connector assembly may be assembled by mounting a cage to a printed circuit board. A receptacle connector, including cables extending from a rear of the connector, may be inserted through an opening in the top or rear of the cage. The receptacle connector may be positioned in the cage by at least one retention member on the cage. A plug, mating to the receptacle connector, also may be positioned by a retention member on the cage. Positioning both the plug and receptacle relative to the cage reduces the tolerance stackup of the assembly and enables the connectors to be designed with shorter wipe length, which enables higher frequency operation.

I/O connector configured for cabled connection to the midboard

A connector for use with high speed signals. The connector may include lead frame assemblies in a connector housing. A lead frame assembly may include signal conductive elements and ground conductive elements disposed in a repeating pattern, and one or more corrugated sheets attached to the ground conductive elements. The corrugated sheets may extend more than half of the length of the signal conductive elements. Valleys of the corrugated sheets may be welded to the ground conductive elements with line welds. The line welds may extend over a large percentage of the length of the conductive elements. Such a configuration enables accurately and repeatedly establishing signal to ground spacing and therefore promotes high signal integrity, even for miniaturized connectors. Such a connector may be used to meet signal integrity requirements in connectors designed for 112 GBps and beyond.

A ground shield includes a plurality of contact members configured to contact the ground contacts of a column of contacts of an electrical connector, so as to electrically common the grounds to each other.

Electrical connector having electrically commoned grounds

Embodiments of an electrical connector assembly are disclosed. The electrical connector assembly can include an electrical connector having a connector housing and a leadframe supported by the connector housing. The leadframe includes an electrically conductive ground plate that includes a drain wire connection tabs that can attach to drain wires of respective electrical cables. The electrical connector assembly can further include a cable clip that supports the plurality of cables. The electrical connector assembly can further include a cable guide that directs the plurality of cables of cables through the cable clip along a desired direction.

Electrical cable connector

Electrical connector assemblies are provided that include electrical connectors having electrical contacts that have receptacle mating ends are provided. The connector housings of the provided electrical connectors include alignment members that are capable of performing staged alignment of components of the electrical connector assemblies. The provided electrical connector assemblies and the electrical connectors provided therein are capable of operating at a data transfer rate of forty gigabits per second with worst case multi-active cross talk that does not exceed a range of about two percent to about four percent.

High speed electrical connector

First and second electrical connectors are configured to be supported by each other prior to being mated to at least one complementary electrical connector. The at least one complementary electrical connector can be a common third electrical connector. The first electrical connector can be configured to be mounted onto a first electrical component of a first type. The second electrical connector can be configured to be mounted onto a second electrical component of a second type that is different than the first type. For instance, one of the first and second electrical components can be a printed circuit board, and the other of the first and second electrical components can include a plurality of electrical cables.
