Disclosed is a method and system for interacting with an IVR system. In one aspect, a computing device receives a user request to connect to an IVR system to perform an action. A request for information (e.g., a request to select from a plurality of menu options) is obtained from the IVR system. In response to the request, the computing device automatically supplies an answer to the request for information to the IVR system. In one embodiment, the answer is a dual-tone multi-frequency (DTMF) signal. The obtaining and supplying steps are repeated until the action has been performed.

Providing an alternative search query to a predicted search query is disclosed herein. A search query is received from a client node. Prior to receiving an indication from the client node that the search query is completely formed, the following steps are performed: 1) a predicted search query is determined by predicting what the search query will be when completed; and 2) an alternative search query that differs from the predicted search query is determined based on the predicted search query. The alternative search query is provided to the client node. The alternative search query may be something that the user search query is unlikely to complete to. For example, in response to the user entering a search query of 'brittany sp', an alternative search query with a spelling suggestion of 'britney spears' is determined and provided to the user.

A method and apparatus for generating a list of candidate alternative spellings is provided. Among a plurality of files, a first file, which contains a link that indicates a user-entered spelling, is found. The link links to a second file. A second spelling, which is spelled similarly to, but not exactly the same as, the first spelling, is located within the second file. The second spelling is added to a list of candidate alternative spellings of the first spelling. The second spelling does not need to be contained in any result field (e.g., title, abstract, or URL) that is associated with the second file.

A computer-implemented approach for processing search queries generally involves normalizing names and descriptions of items. The various forms of a name or description of an item is referred to as an item name variant. The normalized form of the name or description of an item is referred to as a normalized item name. Item name variants that are similar are grouped together to form clusters. Each cluster of item name variants is mapped to a normalized item name. A dictionary of normalized item names are created by storing: 1) the item name variant, 2) the information that is obtained from the item name source and which is associated with the item name variant, and 3) the mapping information that maps the item name variant to the corresponding normalized item name.
