An exhaust temperature control system for a displacement on demand (DOD) diesel engine includes a first and a second cylinder and an air intake that selectively enables air flow into the first cylinder. A fuel injector selectively enables fuel flow into the first cylinder. A controller increases an exhaust temperature of the diesel engine by closing the air intake and disabling fuel flow through the fuel injector to deactivate the first cylinder.

Diesel engine displacement on demand

Exhaust gas temperature is increased to improve the effectiveness of an after-treatment system having an activation temperature by deactivating one or more engine cylinders to increase the exhaust gas temperature from the remaining cylinders (during acceleration) or to decreasing exhaust gas flow rate (during deceleration or idling). In the system of the invention, a controller effects the deactivation and reactivation of cylinders and/or decrease and increase of exhaust gas flow in response to one or more sensors providing input of exhaust gas temperature or information from which exhaust gas temperature can be approximated. By achieving and maintaining the activation temperature, the present invention improves the effectiveness of after-treatment devices thereby lowering regulated emissions to desired levels.

Method for reducing engine exhaust emissions

A particulate trap system for use in the exhaust system of an internal combustion engine has an exhaust conduit with a main branch, a bypass branch, and an exhaust pressure regulating valve disposed within the main branch for selectively diverting exhaust gas through one of the branches. A particulate filter is disposed within the main branch and a burner assembly, having an outlet disposed upstream of the filter, is operable to raise the temperature of the filter to a level sufficient to incinerate particulates thereon. The exhaust pressure regulating valve is configured to act as a metering orifice when in a restrictive position so as to supply a metered amount of exhaust air to the burner while channeling a substantial portion of the exhaust flow through the bypass branch during the regeneration cycle of the system. A pressure relief valve disposed within the bypass branch maintains substantially constant pressure within the exhaust conduit thereby assuring a substantially constant flow of exhaust gas through the metering portion of the exhaust pressure regulating valve and into the burner assembly.

A particulate trap system for use in the exhaust system of an internal combustion engine has an exhaust conduit with a main branch, a bypass branch, and a diverter valve disposed therebetween for selectively diverting exhaust gas through one of the branches. A particulate filter is disposed within the main branch, and a burner assembly having an outlet disposed upstream of the filter is operable to raise the temperature of the filter to a level sufficient to incinerate particulates thereon. A burner supply conduit extending between the exhaust conduit and the burner, having a metering orifice disposed therein, supplies exhaust air to the burner when the diverter valve closes the main branch and channels the exhaust flow through the bypass branch during the regeneration cycle of the system. A pressure relief valve disposed within the bypass branch maintains substantially constant pressure within the exhaust conduit thereby assuring substantially constant flow of exhaust gas through the metering orifice and into the burner assembly.
