The viscosity of solutions of nonionic synthetic associative thickeners is controlled by adding organophosphates to the solution of associative thickeners. The associative thickeners are hydrophobically modified polymers and the organophosphates include one or more hydrophobic groups.

A composition of a loose mass of comminuted raw cotton linter fibers has a bulk density of at least 8 g/100 ml and at least 50% of the fibers in the mass passes through a US standard sieve size #10 (2 mm opening). This composition is made by obtaining a loose mass of first cut, second cut, third cut, or mill runs raw cotton linters or mixtures thereof and comminuting the loose mass of raw cotton linters to a size wherein at least 50% pass through a US standard sieve size #10 (2 mm opening). This composition is used to make cellulose ether derivatives.

A completion and workover fluid composition comprising, water and at least one rheology modifier and/or fluid loss control agent, and at least one other ingredient selected from the group consisting of inorganic salts, shale inhibitors, corrosion inhibitor, biocide, defoamers and finely divided solids particles (e.g., bentonite, attapulgite, sepiolite, calcium carbonate, etc.), depending upon the desired attributes, wherein the rheology modifier and/or the fluid loss control agent is an ethoxylated raw cotton linters or a modified ethoxylated raw cotton linters. The ethoxylated raw cotton linters provides comparable or better rheology and viscosity properties compared to high molecular weight commercial HECs made from purified cotton linters. These ethoxylated raw cotton linters derivatives are suitable for applications in oil-well servicing fluids, particularly to enhance functional properties of completion and workover fluids used during oil-well drilling operations.

A water-based drilling fluid composition includes water and at least one rheology modifier and/or fluid loss control agent, and at least one other ingredient of polymeric additive, inorganic salts, dispersants, shale stabilizers, weighting agents, or finely divided clay particles, depending upon the desired attributes, wherein the rheology modifier and/or the fluid loss control agent comprises carboxymethylated raw cotton linters (CM-RCL) made from the baled raw cotton linters or comminuted raw cotton linters with increased bulk density.

A composition is composed of a hydrophobically modified aminoplast polyether or hydrophobically modified non-urethane polyethers with a viscosity suppressing agent of cyclodextrins or derivatives thereof. A method for improving the pumpability and pourability of aqueous solutions of thickener of a hydrophobically modified aminoplast polyether or hydrophobically modified non-urethane polyethers which is provided by admixing a cyclodextrin with the thickener to form a complex of the cyclodextrin and thickener where the viscosity of the thickener is suppressed and adding the complexed admixture to an aqueous system containing a water-insoluble polymer wherein the cyclodextrin is decomplexed and the thickener becomes an effective thickener. An example of the uses for this composition and method is in film forming coatings such as latex paints.

Water-borne paints containing reduced molecular weight polysaccharide derivatives that are resistant to enzyme hydrolysis. The water-borne paints are biostable, retaining at least about 80% of their initial viscosity 24 hours after they are inoculated with polysaccharide hydrolysis enzyme. A process for making the biostable water-borne paints has the steps: a) treating precursor polysaccharide derivative with polysaccharide hydrolysis enzyme in aqueous medium for a time sufficient to obtain reduced molecular weight polysaccharide derivative; and b) mixing the reduced molecular weight polysaccharide derivative with an effective amount of at least one other water-borne paint ingredient to obtain a water-borne paint.

Biostable water-borne paints and processes for their preparation

Associative thickeners of the present invention are water soluble polymer compositions that have a backbone of poly(acetal- or ketal-polyether) with ends that are capped with hydrophobic groups. They are prepared by copolymerizing an alpha, omega-diol, -di,thiol or-diamino polyether with a gem-dihalide compound in the presence of a base to form an alpha, omega-diol, -dithiol or -diamino poly(acetal- or ketal-polyether) which in turn is reacted with hydrophobic reagents to form the final product. These associative thickeners are used in film forming coating compositions, such as latex paints.
