A method of transmitting information over a feed back channel of a communication system that has multiple antenna systems is provided. Long term channel condition information is obtained from received measured and/or calculated channel parameter values. The obtained long term channel condition information is arranged in a particular manner and transmitted over a defined time period during which the long term channel condition information varies relatively slowly. Because the long term information remains relatively constant for one or more defined time periods, the amount of bandwidth needed to communicate this value is small because it need only be communicated occasionally. Thus only a small bandwidth needs to be allocated for transmitting this long term information.

Method for improved performance and reduced bandwidth channel state information feedback in communication systems

A wireless data communication system simultaneously transmits data signals from more than one antenna with a deterministic, time-dependent phase difference between the signals. In one example, more than one antenna transmits the same data signal with a phase difference between the transmitted signals. In another example multiple users' data signals are simultaneously transmitted using a corresponding plurality of beams that each use at least two transmitting antennas. Transmissions to multiple users on a shared packet data channel can be scheduled at the same time. In one example, the phase difference is periodic and the beams are orthogonal to maximize system throughput even when one or more users is stationary or slowly moving.

Multiple antenna transmissions with deterministic phase differences

Methods of designing, installing and operating communications systems including multiple input multiple output (MIMO) antenna arrays are disclosed. The methods account for the diffusive nature, the polarization nature, and the multi-path nature of the environment in which the antenna arrays operate. According to the various methods, the antennas can be designed, installed and operated so as to provide improved information capacity based on the diffusive, polarization and multi-path nature of the environment in which they operate.

A method of designing, fabricating and operating antennas is disclosed that considers the diffusive nature of the environment in which the antennas are to operate. Furthermore, the antennas can be designed, fabricated and operated so as to provide the optimal channel capacity possible given the diffusive nature of the environment in which they are to operate. The illustrative embodiment of the present invention comprises: describing an environment; describing a candidate antenna; determining a performance characteristic based on the candidate antenna with respect to the environment; and fabricating a first antenna in accordance with the candidate antenna.

Design, fabrication and operation of antennas for diffusive environments

A wireless communication device comprising a signal processing device coupled to a cluster of multiple port antennas that can simultaneously transmit and/or receive communication signals. The cluster of antennas operates within a frequency band having maximum frequency f, and at least a pair of the antenna ports is placed in a volume of space whose longest linear dimension is &lgr;/3 or less where &lgr; is equal to c/f. During operation of the antenna cluster, the radiation patterns from different antennas have main lobes that point in different directions and have correlations of 0.7 or less with respect to each other.
