A power supply controller keeps power supplied to the MRAM and stops the supply of power to the HDD having mechanically movable parts. If that error occurs less frequently than the predetermined number of times, the error history is stored and then a setup for stabling the hardware operation is selected. Then, a restart signal to restart the computer is sent and the process ends (steps 210 through 220).

Disclosed is a method and apparatus for controlling power consumption of the PC, which is provided with base loads comprising a plurality of components, as well as a CPU including operation modes of &ldquo;throttling&rdquo; and &ldquo;clock-down&rdquo;. Actual power consumption of the CPU in a certain operation mode varies heavily or widely within a range of maximum power consumption of the CPU. A variation of actual power consumption of the base loads is relatively gentle or mild. Predicted maximum power consumption (Pmax) of the PC is obtained from actual power consumption of the base loads and maximum power consumption in the current operation mode of the CPU. Reference power vales are set up such that they are compared with the Pmax for changing an operation mode to another operation mode. When the Pmax exceeds a reference power vale, the operation mode of the CPU is changed for controlling actual power consumption of the PC.

In a charging system used in a computer system employing a rechargeable battery, the number of charging/discharging cycles of the battery is detected based on a charging amount of the battery by a charger. A charging condition for the charger is set to increase the capacity of the battery until the number of charging/discharging cycles reaches a predetermined value, and the charging condition for the charger is set to increase the life of the battery after the number of charging/discharging cycles has reached the predetermined value.

A leak current is prevented from flowing during a power off state in a power supply unit having a remote power on/off function by using the momentary switch. In a state of power off, i.e. a state in which a switch SW is turned off, power is not applied to a latch circuit and hence power is not consumed. A switch drive circuit does not consume power. When a user depresses a momentary switch SW during a state that the switch SW is turned off, the switch drive circuit turns the switch SW on. As a result, the latch circuit can receive a drive voltage V from a node located down stream of the switch SW so that it can store or latch the turn on state of the momentary switch SW After that, when the user releases the momentary switch SW it returns to an original position and operation of the switch drive circuit which turns the switch SW on is terminated. However, at this point of time, it becomes possible to maintain the turn on state of the switch SW by the operation of the latch circuit

An invention to effect charging for a battery pack at the suitable time irrespective of the kind of an installed battery pack. A battery pack detects voltage, electric current, and temperature of an accommodated battery main body. When it is determined that charging for the battery main body is required, the battery pack outputs a charge request signal. Further, when it is determined that the battery main body has been brought into a full-charged state, the battery pack stops outputting of the charge request signal. When the charge request signal is inputted from the battery pack, the charge controller causes a direct current voltage supplied from an AC/DC adapter to be supplied for the battery pack, so as to start charging the battery main body of the battery pack. Further, when the continued inputting of the charge request signal is stopped, and the charging for the battery main body is stopped.
