An optical sensing device includes a planar substrate and an array of optical transceivers disposed on the planar substrate. Each optical transceiver includes a photodetector, at least one turning mirror having a reflective surface disposed diagonally relative to the substrate, and multiple waveguides disposed parallel to the substrate. The waveguides include a transmit waveguide, which is coupled to convey outgoing light from a coherent light source to the at least one turning mirror for output from the optical transceiver, and a receive waveguide, which is coupled to receive incoming light reflected by the at least one turning mirror and to convey the incoming light to the photodetector.

A display may use a waveguide to provide image light to an eye box. An emitter may emit infrared light collimated at different angles relative to a collimated axis and divergent along an orthogonal axis. The waveguide may propagate the infrared light and may include overlapping one-dimensional diffractive gratings with parallel periodic structures. Each grating may diffract, towards the eye box, a respective portion of the infrared light from a respective incident angle onto a respective output angle relative to the collimated axis. A camera may capture glints of the infrared light as reflected off a user's eye at the eye box for performing gaze tracking. The emitter and the gratings may effectively form a one-dimensional line of infrared emitters overlapping the eye box while allowing the optical emitter to remain invisible to a user.

For example, an example process may include producing a glint by producing light that reflects off a portion of an eye, receiving the reflected light at a sensor wherein the reflected light is received after passing through a multi-zone lens having a first zone and a second zone, the first zone and second zone having different energy-spreading characteristics, determining a location of the glint based on the reflected light received at the sensor, and determining an eye characteristic based on the determined location of the glint.

A method for optical sensing includes providing a mirror comprising a central reflective region surrounded by a peripheral glare-suppressing region. A beam of light from a laser light source is directed to reflect from the central region so as to pass through an output optic along an axis toward a target scene. The light returned from the target scene through the output optic is focused onto an optical sensor, via collection optics having a collection aperture surrounding the mirror.
