A shutter assembly for a trace element detector includes a shutter wheel having at least one window, and a drive mechanism coupled to the shutter wheel, wherein the drive mechanism rotates the shutter wheel to move the window between at least an outlet port of the shutter assembly and a cleaning station of the shutter assembly. The cleaning station includes at least one cleaning jet positioned to apply a cleaning solution to the window when the window is located at the cleaning station. In the preferred embodiment, the shutter assembly further includes a drying station, and the drive mechanism rotates the shutter wheel to move the window to the drying station after the window has passed the cleaning station. The drying station includes at least one gas jet positioned to apply a gas stream to the window when the window is located at the drying station. A control mechanism controls the application of the cleaning fluid to the cleaning jet and the application of the gas stream to the gas jet, as either continuous flows or intermittent pulses. The cleaning station and the drying station are preferably isolated by the use of a base plate including a separating wall. The base plate is also provided with drain ports to allow excess cleaning solution to drain from the shutter assembly.

Optical shutter assembly for trace element detector

A mobile laboratory for in situ detection of organic and heavy metal pollutants in ground water is disclosed. Pulsed laser energy is delivered via fiber optic media to create a laser spark on a remotely located analysis sample, which is irradiated. In a first operational mode, laser energy emitted from an optical delivery system, e.g., a fiber optic media, is focused, for example by one or more lenses, on the surface of an analysis sample, thus generating a plasma. At high temperatures generated by the laser spark, dissociation occurs, allowing the emitted spectrum to be analyzed for the presence of trace elements, such as heavy metals. Because temperature changes after the end of the laser pulse result in a changing spectral characteristic of the sample, signals emitted from the recombining plasma can be used to identify the contents of the sample. In a second mode, the focusing of the laser energy is removed, so that organic molecules with an aromatic structure emit absorbed ultraviolet energy as fluorescence, which is transmitted via fiber optic media for further analysis. The measured wavelength and time characteristics of the emitted fluorescence can be compared against predetermined characteristics to identify the organic substances in the analysis sample.

Method and apparatus for in situ detection of minute amounts of trace

A method and apparatus is disclosed which is capable of detecting an individual's level of fatigue and generating an alarm signal in accordance therewith. The level of fatigue is determined based on changes in the reflectivity of a projected IR beam which is reflected off an eyelid. At initial stages of drowsiness the eyelid is relatively rough and the reflectivity is lower than when the eyelid fully closes as when a person is heavily fatigued.

Method and apparatus for fatigue detection

A high resolution directional gamma ray detector includes a thin piece of foil, such as tantalum, which reacts with gamma rays incident to the edge of the foil to generate electron/positron pairs. Gamma rays originating from directions other than a direction of interest are shielded from the foil by shielding plates. An opening between the foil by shielding plates. An opening between two collimating plates permits passage of gamma rays originating from a direction of interest and allows gamma rays originating from a direction of interest to react with the foil. The generated electron and positron cause ionization in a plurality of cells. Signals resulting from these ionizations are processed by an electronic computation system through the use of coincidence processing to determine whether the signals are the result of a reaction between the foil and a gamma ray which passed through the collimator opening.
