A method and an apparatus for automatic condition checking of an elevator are provided, wherein an elevator car of the elevator is situated in a door zone of a first landing in an elevator shaft following an earthquake. The method includes determining whether the load carried by hoisting ropes is evenly distributed between the hoisting ropes by checking the status or measurement data of at least one rope tension measurement device. The test unit determines whether the elevator car is empty and conducts a drive test for the elevator car in order to determine unimpeded access for the elevator car to other landings. The elevator is returned to normal use, if the drive test indicates unimpeded access for the elevator car to the other landings.

The invention relates to a safety arrangement of an elevator and a method for implementing safety spaces in an elevator shaft. The elevator has an elevator control system, an elevator motor, a power supply circuit of the elevator motor, and at least one mechanical stopping appliance for preventing movement of the elevator car in the elevator shaft. In the method according to the invention information is read with the control unit from the sensors that measure the position of the landing door of the elevator and possibly information is read from the sensors that measure the position of the door of the elevator car. If it is detected that more landing doors than the door of the elevator car are open, the control unit is switched to the person in the elevator shaft mode and information about the person in the elevator shaft mode is sent with the control unit to the elevator control system.

A door sill arrangement for an elevator has a profiled sill element with upper and lower grooves. First and second door panels of the elevator are provided with first and second sliding guides, respectively. The first and second sliding guides move in the upper and lower grooves of the profiled sill element when the doors are opened. Upper and lower plastic bars are attached to the first and second sliding guides, respectively. The upper and lower plastic bars are pulled by the front sliding guides, when the door panels are opened. The upper and lower plastic bars slide along through the upper and lower grooves and substantially fill or cover the grooves which would otherwise be exposed when the door panels are opened.
