There is provided detecting modification of optically active cellulose-based film. A method comprises split refracting or split reflecting light received by a surface pattern of an optically active cellulose-based film into a plurality of output light patterns, wherein an output light pattern is determined from the plurality of output light patterns on the basis of a modification applied to the optically active cellulose-based film.

The application relates to microfluidic needles and their manufacturing methods. The microfluidic needle comprises an interface portion containing at least one fluid communication channel, an elongated needle portion () projecting away from the interface portion (), the needle portion having a tip and sidewalls connecting the tip to the interface portion, and at least two microfluidic channels (A-B) within the needle portion in fluidic connection with the at least one communication channel, the microfluidic channels being at least partly oriented parallel to the elongated needle portion. According to the application, the microfluidic channels exit the needle portion at the sidewalls of the needle portion. The needle may be fabricated by ALD-assisted silicon micromachining. The needle can be used for injection and/or sampling fluids to/from tissue or individual cells.

Microneedle

A microfluidic chip device (MCD) and its use for performing miniaturized assays on magnetic microbeads (MMs) are described. The MCD is particularly useful for carrying out miniaturized transcript analysis by aiding affinity capturing (TRAC) assays, including PCR. The MCD comprises at least one reaction chamber with sealable liquid connections and at least one fluidic pillar filter in each chamber. The fluidic pillar filter comprises rods with spacings allowing MMs to pass. The sealable liquid connections feed liquid to the reaction chamber, wherein air bubbles are removed. The liquid stream contacts the MMs, which are manipulated with a magnetic rod. The liquid connections enable trapping of the MMs behind the pillar filters or in the channel, while the liquid is changed.

Microfluidic chip devices and their use

A sample port includes a body equipped with an internal cavity and two plungers arranged moveably in the internal cavity, whereby the plungers can be pressed against each other in the internal cavity, in order to compress a sample. At least one of the plungers can be moved into a reactor in order to collect a sample. The sample port also includes a sample chamber, which is formed by a space remaining between the internal cavity and the plungers. At least one sample-container connection is connected in connection with the internal cavity in order to collect the sample from sample chamber. In addition, the sample port has a filter which is provided to at least either plunger for separating a liquid component of the sample from a solid component and means for leading the liquid component of the sample out of the sample chamber.
