A pattern recognition device comprising: a coupled network of damped, nonlinear, dynamic elements configured to generate an output response in response to at least one environmental condition, wherein each element has an associated multi-stable potential energy function that defines multiple energy states of an individual element, and wherein the elements are tuned such that environmental noise triggers stochastic resonance between energy levels of at least two elements; a processor configured to monitor the output response over time and to determine a probability that the pattern recognition device is in a given state based on the monitored output response; and detecting a pattern in the at least one environmental condition based on the probability.

Noise-driven coupled dynamic pattern recognition device for low power applications

An autonomous sensor that includes a snap-through buckling beam, a proof mass, an ultra-low-power microcontroller unit, a wireless transmitter, a power management unit, and a power storage unit. The snap-through buckling beam produces mechanical energy. The proof mass is attached to the snap-through buckling beam. The proof mass transfers mechanical energy to two piezoelectric transducers that convert the mechanical energy into electrical energy and produce an output signal. The ultra-low-power microcontroller unit converts the output signal into output data. The wireless transmitter transfers the output data to an external device. The power management unit provides the electrical energy to the ultra-low-power microcontroller unit and the wireless transmitter. The power storage unit is rechargeable, stores electrical energy from the two piezoelectric transducers, and non-replaceable. The autonomous sensor simultaneously harvests energy and measures vibrations in an external environment.

Autonomous sensor

A system and method include a non-linear dynamic sensor, such as a magnetic field sensor, having an oscillator with a dynamic response that passes through a critical point beyond which the oscillator responds in an oscillatory regime. A processor operatively connected to the non-linear dynamic sensor is configured to, based upon an input signal x received by the non-linear dynamic sensor, adaptively self-tune the non-linear dynamic sensor to a dynamic range within the oscillatory regime adjacent to the critical point such that the input signal x spans the entire dynamic range. An array of such sensors includes a global feedback capability to mitigate coupling losses.

Non-linear biomimetic magnetic field sensor and array

A system that may be used for energy harvesting includes a flexible beam secured between a first support and a second support. The supports are spaced apart at a distance less than a length of the flexible beam such that the beam is buckled. Responsive to external vibrations the flexible beam switches between a first position and a second position. A magnetic proof mass is coupled to the flexible beam at the beam's midpoint. At least one permanent magnet is positioned proximate to the magnetic proof mass and has the same polarity. The permanent magnet is positioned to expose the magnetic proof mass to a repulsive force when the magnetic proof mass is located at both the first position and the second position. Piezoelectric transducers are located above and below the first and second positions of the flexible beam to harvest energy.

Non-linear bi-stable buckled beam energy harvester using repulsive magnetic force for asymmetry compensation

A sensor for detecting both magnetic fields and electric fields can include at least one Sawyer-Tower (ST) circuit that can incorporate a multiferroic capacitor. An odd number of ST circuits coupled together in a ring configuration, so that for each ST circuit, the output of one ST circuit is an input to another of the ST circuits. The multiferroic capacitors can include a multiferroic layer that can be deposed on a substrate. For each multiferroic capacitor, the deposition process can cause an inherent amount of impurities in the multiferroic layer. The number of said odd number of ST circuits to be coupled together is chosen according to the amount of impurities, to 'forgive' the impurities. The higher the level of impurities in the multiferroic layers, that more ST circuits that are required in the ring to achieve the same sensor sensitivity. BDFO can be chosen for the multiferroic material.

Sensor incorporating multiferroic materials for detecting both electric and magnetic fields

The dynamics of a nonlinear sensor are configured to mimic threshold crossing dynamics of an integrate-fire neuron with negatively correlated inter-spike intervals. The configuration of the sensor results in a biomimetic sensor that provides results with an accuracy that mimic neuron sensing.

Biomimetic sensor and method for configuring biomimetic sensor

A nanomechanical device, operating as a reprogrammable logic gate, and performing fundamental logic functions such as AND/OR and NAND/NOR. The logic function can be programmed (e.g., from AND to OR) dynamically, by adjusting the operating parameters of the resonator. The device can access one of two stable steady states, according to a specific logic function; this operation is mediated by the noise floor which can be directly adjusted, or dynamically tuned via an adjustment of the underlying nonlinearity of the resonator, i.e., it is not necessary to have direct control over the noise floor. The demonstration of this reprogrammable nanomechanical logic gate affords a path to the practical realization of a new generation of mechanical computers.

Noise-assisted reprogrammable nanomechanical logic gate and method

A nonlinear dynamic system comprising: a number N of nonlinear components, wherein each nonlinear component experiences intrinsic oscillation when a coupling parameter &#x3bb; is tuned past a threshold value, and wherein the nonlinear components are unidirectionally coupled together in a ring configuration; and a signal generator configured to generate N coherent locking signals; wherein each locking signal is phase shifted by 2&#x3c0;/N with respect to the other locking signals; and wherein the signal generator is coupled to the nonlinear components such that each locking signal locks a frequency of the intrinsic oscillation of one of the nonlinear components to a frequency of the locking signal.

A method for providing a biological logic gate comprising the following steps: subjecting a bistable autoregulatory gene network (GRN) to a noisy background; identifying adjustable parameters of the GRN; using logical stochastic resonance to determine values of the GRN parameters which result in the GRN performing different logic gate functions; and setting the parameter values of the GRN such that the GRN performs a first logic gate function.

An ambient electric field detector comprising: a collection mechanism disposed to generate a current signal in response to the ambient electric field; an input current mirror operatively coupled to the collection mechanism and disposed to amplify and duplicate the current signal to generate a duplicate signal; and an odd number (i) of at least three nonlinear, over-damped, bi-stable elements coupled uni-directionally in a ring such that the ring of elements oscillates, wherein at least one of the elements has a different initial state than the other elements and each element is disposed to receive the duplicate signal.

In various embodiments, an apparatus for detecting electric fields is disclosed that includes an array of non-linear elements configured into an oscillator with each coupled to one or more electric-field sensing plates. In various embodiments, an output of the array produces a frequency that varies as a function of an electric field sensed by the one or more electric-field sensing plates.

Coupled electric field sensors for DC target electric field detection

A logic gate is adapted to implement logical expressions. The logic gate includes at least one input that is adapted to receive an input signal and at least one control signal. At least one of the input signal and the control signal is a noise signal. At least one output is adapted to produce an output signal. A nonlinear updater operates as a dynamically configurable element and produces multiple different logic gates as selected by the control signal based at least in part on the noise signal. The nonlinear updater is electrically coupled to the input and is also electrically coupled to the output. The nonlinear updates is configured to apply a nonlinear function to the input signal in response to the control signal to produce the output signal representing a logical expression being implemented by one of the multiple different logic gates on the input signal.

Reconfigurable and reliable logic circuit elements that exploit nonlinearity and noise

A device includes a plurality of channel-capture circuits. Each circuit may include an array of N non-linear oscillators, wherein N&#x2267;3, circularly connected to each other in series such that unidirectional signal flow occurs between the oscillators. Each circuit may be configured to capture a respective channel signal from a wideband signal containing a plurality of channel signals and convert its captured channel signal to a lower frequency. Each oscillator may include an oscillator input configured to receive an output signal from another oscillator, an oscillator output configured to provide an output for an input of another oscillator, a frequency capture input configured to receive at least a portion of the wideband signal, at least two amplifiers, and a control capacitor coupled to the output of the amplifiers. An analog-to-digital converter may be coupled to the output of each channel-capture circuit.
