Printer spindle assembly is provided including media spindle having first end and second end, a commutator disposed circumferentially at first end, at least two brushes in electrical contact with commutator and connected to voltage source, a plurality of electrically conductive springs serially disposed on media spindle in electrical communication with commutator, and a continuous electrically conductive path formed of electrically resistive material disposed along longitudinal axis of media spindle and configured to be in electrical contact with first spring end of one or more electrically conductive springs in the compressed state to form series circuit. Voltage source, brushes, and commutator form closed electrical circuit. Each electrically conductive spring is configured to be in uncompressed state in absence of media on media spindle and one or more of electrically conductive springs is configured to be in compressed state in presence of media on media spindle.

Printers, printer spindle assemblies, and methods for determining media width for controlling media tension

Printer is provided having support base on which print media travels. Printer includes thickness detection module and processor. Thickness detection module includes pinch arm assembly with pinch arm having first and second ends, encoder, and proximate dual channel encoder sensor. First end is biased toward support base. Encoder with number of circumferentially spaced line pairs is disposed at second end. Pinch arm and encoder configured to rotate in response to engagement of pinch arm with at least print media portion. Dual channel encoder sensor configured to detect rotation direction and encoder count and output signal representing encoder count. Encoder count is number of circumferentially spaced line pairs that pass by dual channel encoder sensor as pinch arm and encoder rotate. Processor is communicatively coupled to dual channel encoder sensor and configured to receive signal and calculate print media thickness of portion from encoder count using conversion factor.

Printers and methods for detecting print media thickness therein

A printer ribbon supply spindle assembly is provided. The ribbon spindle has multiple segments contiguous to each other. The spindle assembly includes a commutator disposed circumferentially on the first segment of the ribbon spindle and two carbon brushes connected to a voltage source and disposed generally in electrical contact with and on either side of the commutator. The voltage source, the carbon brushes, and the commutator complete an electrical circuit. C-shaped conductive springs are disposed over each of the multiple segments. The c-shaped conductive springs compress when covered by a printer ribbon and become in electrical contact with the commutator and adjacent compressed c-shaped springs, forming additional parallel circuits. An electronic element is disposed at the center of the c-shaped conductive springs. Measuring a change in the circuit due the additional parallel circuits with the electronic element indicates the printer ribbon width.
