A multi-mode receiver system for processing signals based on a plurality of systems is disclosed. Embodiments of the invention provide for a shared architecture for processing baseband signals corresponding to a plurality of systems.

Multi-mode receiver

A wireless communications device includes an antenna that receives a first signal at a first frequency and a second signal at a second frequency and converts the first and second signals into a composite signal. A first oscillator outputs a first oscillator signal at a first frequency and a second oscillator outputs a second oscillator signal at a second frequency. A demodulator receives the composite signal and the first and second oscillator signals. The oscillator signals are selected so that the demodulator generates a low frequency signal with components of the first and second signals occupying a common frequency band. The wireless communications device allows executing a 'Soft Handoff' even when the first and second frequencies are different.

A communications device includes a frequency conversion circuit and a control circuit. An antenna receives a radio signal at a first frequency and converts it into a radio frequency (RF) signal of the first frequency. The frequency conversion circuit is associated with the antenna and configured to convert the RF signal into a first signal component and a second signal component. The first and second signal components occupy a baseband. The control circuit has first ports connected to the frequency conversion circuit to receive the first and second signal components and second ports connected to a processor circuit to output amplified first and second signal components, and separate channels for the first and second signal components existing between the first and second ports. Each channel comprises an amplifier and a feedback loop configured to control the amplifier as a function of a reference signal and a control signal derived from the RF signal. The communications device may be a cellular phone comprising a direct conversion module.

Secondary automatic gain control loops for direct conversion CDMA receivers

A wireless communications device includes an antenna that receives a first signal at a first radio frequency and a second signal at a second radio frequency and converts the first and second signals into a composite radio frequency (RF) signal. A first oscillator outputs a first oscillator signal at a first frequency and a second oscillator outputs a second oscillator signal at a second frequency. A demodulator receives the composite RF signal and the first and second oscillator signals. The oscillator signals are selected so that the demodulator generates a low frequency signal with components of the first and second signals occupying a common frequency band. The wireless communications device allows executing a &ldquo;Soft Handoff&rdquo; even when the first and second radio frequencies are different.

A wireless communications device uses an amplifier module to transmit signals. The amplifier module is configured to amplify a signal. The amplifier module includes an amplifier circuit and a control module. The control module is configured to vary the operating parameters of the amplifier circuit based on a desired output power level. The control module relies on stored data values to dynamically vary the operating parameters of the amplifier circuit so as to increase the efficiency of the amplifier circuit.

System and method for dynamically varying operational parameters of an amplifier

A system for receiving a transmitted signal is provided. The system includes a first receiver that can receive the transmitted signal and decode the transmitted signal according to a first demodulation format, such as a CDMA or PCS format. A second receiver, such as an FM demodulator, is connected to the first receiver at a suitable location, such as after initial signal amplification and processing has been completed. The second receiver can decode the transmitted signal according to a second demodulation format, such as AMPS.

A communications device includes an amplifier module configured to amplify a signal. The amplifier module includes a parallel arrangement of amplifiers each designed to operate with increased efficiency for different power level ranges. A method and system for intelligently controlling the linearity of an RF receiver by selectively increasing the effective third-order intercept point (IP,) value of a low noise amplifier (LNA)/mixer channel only when needed. A control signal is generated based on mode of operation (receive mode); received signal strength information (RSSI); transmit channel output power, as indicated by a Tx automatic gain control (AGC) signal; and the true received signal strength, as indicated by the pilot signal-to-noise ratio in a CDMA system. The control signal is then used to selectively increase the bias current&mdash;and thus linearity&mdash;of the LNA/mixer channel, or to select one of several LNAs having differing IP,values to effectively increase the linearity of the LNA/mixer channel.

Intelligent control of receiver linearity based on interference

A modulated signal is translated to a broadcast frequency by a translation phase lock loop. In the translation phase lock loop the output frequency, which is the broadcast frequency, is mixed with a translation frequency, and the resulting translated frequency is compared to the modulated signal. If an amplitude modulator is inserted into the translation loop, the phase comparison/feedback nature of the phase lock loop will tend to cancel the phase noise introduced in the amplitude modulation process. Any other circuits placed within the loop will tend to have any phase noise they introduce, which is in the phase lock loop bandwidth, canceled by the loop.
