A cellular telephone apparatus capable of establishing and maintaining a call even in case of a failure in call establishment or a call due to a busy state of a called party or a communications channel disorder such as congestion or received wave level shortage. In response to a request for a call origination for a destination telephone number, a call is originated for the destination telephone number. In case of a failure in the call origination, a call termination process is executed and then the call origination is retried. Once a call is established after the call origination, in response to a detection of disconnection of the call caused not by a user but by a channel disorder, a call termination process executed. A call is originated for the same telephone number as a destination telephone number of the disconnected call. In an embodiment, the retrying is put off while a received wave level is less than a predetermined level. If a count of said call origination reaches a predetermined count value, then the retrying is stopped.

Position information system

Battery test of a backup battery in an emergency informing apparatus is performed. The result of the battery test is displayed to display an amount of remaining energy, an error condition, an empty condition, a replacing timing of the backup battery. The result may be displayed by flickering an LED or an LCD. The event of the battery test is controlled with a timer to prevent a power consumption of the backup battery. That is, the battery test is effected when an engine is started after a predetermined interval has passed from the previous engine start. Moreover, a timer repeatedly generates a timing signal. If the timing signal is generated during a running condition of the engine, the battery test is performed. Moreover, at start-up of the engine if a predetermined interval has passed from the previous battery test, the present battery test is executed. The time interval data may be inputted to change the predetermined interval.

Emergency informing apparatus

An emergency reporting apparatus for a vehicle includes a memory storing information representing a telephone number of an emergency report receiving center. Connection with the emergency report receiving center is implemented in response to the telephone number represented by the information in the memory. An emergency can be reported to the emergency report receiving center. The information in the memory can be updated to change the telephone number represented thereby.
