Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described that provide for receive chain selection at a user equipment (UE) with efficient switching between a reduced number of receive chains and an increased number of receive chains for downlink communications based on conditions at the UE. A UE may adaptively adjust the number of active receive chains based on downlink grant activity, channel conditions, network parameters, or any combinations thereof. An estimator block at the UE may determine to adjust the number of receive chains based on a number of downlink grants within one or more time periods. In some cases, grants for an amount of data that exceeds a threshold may be qualified in order to be counted at the estimation block. Further, a transient state may be provided where the UE may maintain a higher number of active receive chains until UE feedback is provided.

Receive diversity techniques in wireless communications

Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described. In one example, a method for wireless communications at a user equipment (UE) includes determining one or more performance metrics related to communications over a wireless channel and comparing the one or more performance metrics with a performance level for the communications over the wireless channel. The method may include selecting a power mode for the UE based at least in part on the comparing and determining an operating state of a subset of a plurality of radio frequency front end elements of at least one active radio frequency chain of the UE based at least in part on the power mode and a priority of the one or more performance metrics. The method may also include adjusting the subset of the plurality of radio frequency front end elements based at least in part on the operating state.

Techniques for adaptive power mode control

Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described that provide for antenna selection at a user equipment (UE). The UE may have a set of available antennas for uplink and downlink communications, and may select a first subset of antennas for uplink communications and a second subset of antennas for downlink communications. The first subset of antennas may be based on one or more uplink metrics, and the second subset of antennas may be based on the first subset of antennas and one or more downlink channel metrics, traffic amounts, or any combinations thereof.

Antenna selection techniques for uplink and downlink wireless communications

A user equipment (UE) may make a joint decision of adaptive receive diversity (ARD) and adaptive transmit diversity (ATD) configurations, including transmit (Tx) and receive (Rx) antennas selection and/or blanking based on downlink (DL) and uplink (UL) traffic conditions. The UE may disable at least one Tx chain for a transmission of a codebook-based sounding reference signal (SRS) (SRS-CB) based on one or more of at least one DL traffic condition or at least one UL traffic condition, and transmit, to a base station, upon disabling the at least one Tx chain, the SRS-CB via an antenna associated with at least one active Tx chain.
