The present invention is a composition comprising an aqueous dispersion of metal oxide pigment particles coated with an organosilane polymer comprising structural units of an alkyltrihydroxysilane or a salt thereof, a dialkyldihydroxysilane or a salt thereof, and an ancillary alkylsilane triol. The composition of the present invention provides hydrophobicity to pigment particles, thereby imparting water resistance, and allows for high loadings of pigment in water without increased viscosity. The dispersion is further useful for providing stain and corrosion resistance in coatings arising from paints.

A method for inhibiting scale comprises adding to a fluid that causes scale formation a polycarboxylic acid or a salt thereof which has a star structure and at least 5 arms. A star polymer comprising a core based on 2,2'-[Oxybis(methylene)]bis[2-(hydroxymethyl)-1,3-propanediol] and 6 arms comprising linear polycarboxylic acids of degree of polymerization (DP) of the arm of at least 2 and in some embodiments up to 15 or more is useful in inhibiting scale formation.

Scale inhibition using star polymers

The present invention relates to a compound comprising a hydrophobically modified poly(oxyalkylene-urethane) having a hydrophobic fragment represented by Structure I:  where Ar, Ar; R, m, and n are defined herein. The compound of the present invention provides viscosity stability upon tinting for paints containing a hydrophobically modified poly(oxyalkylene-urethane) rheology modifier, more particularly a HEUR rheology modifier.

A water-based coating composition containing two parts A and B: (A) a binder component containing a waterborne epoxy dispersion, dispersed inorganic particles, and a polymeric dispersant; and (B) a hardener component, and a ratio of the component (A) and the component (B) is 90:1 to 2:1. The polymeric dispersant contains anti-agglomerating functional groups that are unreactive with oxirane groups of the epoxy dispersion.

Coating composition

Iodine transfer radical polymerization of an ethylenically unsaturated monomer comprising (meth)acrylic acid, salt thereof, or combination thereof, in the presence of a radical polymerization initiator, an organoiodide, and a solvent, is a useful method for making (meth)acrylic acid polymers. The amounts of components utilized can be 2 to 100 equivalents of acrylic acid and 2 to 100 equivalents of sodium acrylate, both dissolved in water to form a 15 to 50 weight percent solution, based on the total weight of the acrylic acid, sodium acrylate, and water; 0.05 to 1 equivalent of an azo polymerization initiator, 1 equivalent of an organoiodide; and 0 to 3 equivalents of an iodide salt. (Meth)acrylic acid polymer solutions are made by these methods. The (meth)acrylic polymers are useful as dispersants.

Scale inhibition using branched polymers

Reverse iodine transfer polymerization of an ethylenically unsaturated monomer comprising (meth)acrylic acid, salt thereof, or combination thereof, in the presence of a radical polymerization initiator, an oxidant, an iodide salt, and a solvent, is a useful method for making (meth)acrylic acid polymers. The amounts of components utilized can be 5 to 500 equivalents of the ethylenically unsaturated monomer comprising (meth)acrylic acid, salt thereof, or combination thereof, in the presence of 1 to 3 equivalents of the radical polymerization initiator, 0.2 to 1 equivalent of the oxidant, and 1 equivalent of the iodide salt. (Meth)acrylic acid polymer solutions are made by these methods. The (meth)acrylic polymers are useful as dispersants.

Reverse iodine transfer polymerization method and compositions therefrom

A branched polycarboxylic acid or salt thereof, wherein the average number of branches is (2) to (100) and the average degree of polymerization of the branches is (2) to (50), is an effective polymeric dispersant. More specifically, the polymeric dispersant is a branched polycarboxylic acid or salt thereof, in which the branched polycarboxylic acid is derived from polymerization of (meth)acrylic acid; the average degree of polymerization is (10) to (150); the average number of branches is (2) to (20); and the average degree of polymerization of the branches is (2) to (30). The branched polycarboxylic acid or salt thereof can be combined with a pigment to form an aqueous dispersion. An aqueous coating composition includes the aqueous dispersion; a polymeric binder; and a rheology modifier.

A hydrophilic polyurethane comprising polymerized units of: (a) a water-soluble polyol having hydroxyl functionality from two to four and a weight-average molecular weight from 800 to 16,000; and (b) an aliphatic polyisocyanate having isocyanate functionality from two to six; wherein polymerized ethylene oxide units comprise at least 85 wt % of said hydrophilic polyurethane; and wherein a product of weight fraction of polymerized ethylene oxide units and polyethylene oxide mean molecular weight is from 4,200 to 16,000.

The present invention relates to a process for preparing a coatings composition with an open time additive comprising the steps of a) contacting an aqueous dispersion of alkali swellable polymer particles with a rheology modifier and a binder to form a coatings composition with a VOC of less than 50 g/L; and b) neutralizing the alkali swellable particles with a non-volatile base after or upon contact with the rheology modifier and the binder to form swelled multi-staged polymer particles; wherein the alkali swellable polymer particles comprise a shell having a Tof not greater than 25&#xb0; C. and an acid functionalized core; and wherein the core-to-shell ratio is in the range of from 1:3.2 to 1:10. The composition arising from the process of the present invention is useful for improving open time, especially for low VOC coatings applications.

Preparation of a coatings formulation with alkali swellable polymer particles

The present invention relates to a composition comprising an aqueous dispersion of multistage polymer particles with a first phase comprising structural units of a carboxylic acid monomer and a nonionic ethylenically unsaturated monomer; and a second phase with a calculated Tof less than 50&#xb0; C. and comprising a mixture of polymers which together comprise structural units of styrene or methyl methacrylate or both; structural units of one or of n-butyl acrylate, 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate, or n-butyl methacrylate; and structural units of a carboxylic acid monomer. The composition is useful as an open time additive in coatings formulations.

Aqueous dispersion of mutlistage polymer particles

The present invention relates to a process for preparing an aqueous dispersion of neutralized multistage polymer particles comprising the steps of contacting under emulsion polymerization conditions a) an aqueous dispersion of first polymer particles with b) first monomers to form an aqueous dispersion of 2-stage polymer particles; then contacting under emulsion polymerization conditions the aqueous dispersion of 2-stage polymer particles with second monomers comprising to form an unneutralized aqueous dispersion of 3-stage polymer particles; then neutralizing the unneutralized aqueous dispersion of 3-stage polymer particles with a base to form an aqueous dispersion of neutralized 3-stage polymer particles, wherein the first and second monomers form a shell having a calculated Tof less than 50&#xb0; C. The process of the present invention is useful in preparing a composition that is useful as an open time additive in coatings formulations.
