Apparatus for monitoring a pose of a tool relative to an object includes plural range sensors arranged on a support. The range sensors may be provided by plural ultrasound transducers. The support is integrated with or coupled to: the tool. The tool may comprise a guide configured to constrain another tool to be moved along an axis defined by the guide. The transducers output signals that encode plural measured distances between points having known locations relative to the support and points on a surface of the object. A data processing system is configured to: process the signals to obtain the plural measured distances; and process the measured distances to generate an estimated pose of the support relative to the object. A user feedback interface is operative to communicate to a user information about a current pose of the tool relative to the object. The apparatus has example application in surgery including drilling holes for pedicle screws.

Methods and apparatus for localization and navigation of surgical tools

An apparatus and method for tracking the position of one or more connected rigid bodies using markers attached to the rigid bodies by laterally compliant connectors. Systems based on this method are comprised of laterally compliant connectors, a position tracking system and a data processing algorithm to determine the positions and orientations of the rigid bodies. Variations in the methods of attachment of the laterally compliant connectors, the means by which lateral compliance in the connector is produced, and in the layout of the markers are presented.

Flexible tracker systems

Methods and apparatus for integrating an electromagnetic navigation system and a tool and aligning the tool with a target are presented, including a sensor tool, a tool, a field generator, a display, and a computer. The sensor tool attaches to a target component in a unique position relative to target features. The field generator is fixed relative to the tool except in rotation about a tool axis. The display is adjustably mounted to the tool and automatically adjusts image parameters. Target registration and error compensation methods are provided. The system detects magnetic field and signal disturbances that may lead to inaccurate navigation, filters navigation data, and adjusts filtering parameters based on detected conditions. Apparatus for proximally locking an IM nail such that a clear passage through the cannulation of the nail is maintained are provided.

Tool with integrated navigation and guidance system and related apparatus and methods

A method and apparatus for haptic hard surface emulation using a dynamic physical constraint are provided. The movement and position of the dynamic physical constraint is actively controlled in order to emulate a hard surface. The dynamic physical constraint may be controlled by a computer. In another aspect of the invention, the dynamic physical constraint limits the motion of a manipulator joint in space. The position at any time of the dynamic physical constraint is dependent on the position in space of the manipulator's end effector.

A method for locating a guide wire axis on a femoral neck comprises the steps of tracking a position and orientation of a femur; registering a frame of reference with respect to the position and orientation of the femur from a first registration probe mounted onto the femur in a predetermined configuration, the frame of reference having preoperative planned data pertaining to the femoral neck; digitizing femoral neck data with respect to the position and orientation of the femur from a second registration probe positioned onto the femoral neck at desired orientations; calculating a position and orientation of the guide wire axis with respect to the position and orientation of the femur as a function of the preoperative planned data and the femoral neck data.

Method and apparatus for computer-assisted femoral head resurfacing

A hinge structure composed of a supporting hinge and aligning hinge. The supporting hinge is composed of a first and second part one of which has a first bearing with a spherical bearing portion the other a cooperating seat and preferably a cylindrical bearing surface opening therefrom. The first bearing cooperates with seat and the cylindrical bearing surface to support and prevent relative lateral movement of the first part while permitting rotational movement. The aligning hinge is formed of a second bearing having spherical bearing surface portion and a second hinge portion with a cylindrical bearing portion adapted to receive the second bearing in mating relation to permit rotation around the spherical axis of its spherical portion while preventing lateral movement.
