The invention relates to polyamide pellets for use in the production of high molecular weight polytetramethyleneadipamide articles. The polyamide pellets have sizes of between 1 mm and 20 mm and porosity of between 0.1 and 20 vol %. Prepolymer polyamide pellets have a crushing strength of at least 0.5, and after-condensed pellets have crushing strength of at least 15 kg.

High molecular weight polytetramethyleneadipamide pellets

The invention relates to a method for the production of high-molecular polytetramethylene adipamide in a two-step process in which the prepolymer particles obtained in the first process step are compressed into pellets which are subjected to the after-condensation reaction. The obtained high-molecular polytetramethylene adipamide pellets can be used without further shaping through e.g. melt extrusion.

Production of high-molecular polytetramethylene adipamide pellet

A process is disclosed for the preparation of polytetramethylene adipamide by heating in a first reaction zone, the salt of 1,4-diaminobutane and adipic acid, with from 0-25 wt. % of other polymide-forming compounds, at a pressure between 5 and 100 bars to form a prepolymer, then passing the prepolymer containing liquid reaction mixture to a second reaction zone wherein the temperature of the liquid reaction mixture is maintained above its solidification point while the pressure is simultaneously reduced, then subjecting the prepolymer containing liquid reaction mixture to after-condensation in at least one subsequent reaction zone.
