An information storage system is described which comprises a reading device (6) and an optical record carrier (5) having at least two information planes (1, 2, 3). The radiation from the record carrier is converted in a detection system (15) into a detection signal (16) which is applied to a detection circuit (17). In order that this circuit can derive the read information from the detection signal in a reliable manner, the interference signals generated by the information planes which are not to be read should comply with a requirement, referred to as the interference requirement, which is characteristic of the detection circuit. Values for the parameters of the record carrier, such as the thickness of the layers between the information planes and the reflection and transmission coefficients of the information planes then follow from this interference requirement.

An optical information storage system has a multi-recording-layer record carrier and a scanner device for the carrier. The scanner produces a radiation beam which is compensated for spherical aberration for a single height of the scanning spot with the stack of layers. The height of the stack is determined by the maximum spherical aberration permissible for the system. The number of layers in the stack is determined by the minimum distance between layers, which depends on the crosstalk in the error signals due to currently unscanned layers.

An optical information storage system has a multi-recording layer record carrier and a scanner device for the carrier. The scanner produces a radiation beam which is compensated for spherical aberration for a single height of the scanning spot with the stack of layers. The height of the stack is determined by the maximum spherical aberration permissible for the system. The number of layers in the stack is determined by the minimum distance between layers, which depends on the crosstalk in the error signals due to currently unscanned layers.

A high frequency HID ballast includes an inverter for operating the HID lamp at high frequency and an arc instability controller which detects and adjusts the operating frequency of the inverter to avoid acoustic resonance of the discharge arc. The ballast ensures that the power delivered to the lamp remains substantially constant despite variations in the gain of the inverter which occur with changes in the operating frequency. Power control is accomplished by sensing lamp power and controlling a boost converter to vary the bus voltage feeding the inverter. The boost converter is also controlled during lamp ignition, when the load provided by the HID lamp is low, to clamp the bus voltage at a predetermined level. The ballast employs universal techniques suitable for operating HID lamps of different types, wattages and manufacturers despite the occurrence of acoustic resonance/arc instabilities among these lamps over a fairly broad frequency range.

A method for detecting arc instabilities in a gas discharge lamp by evaluating the deviations of an electrical parameter of the lamp. A method suitable for detecting frequencies at which acoustic resonance induced instabilities occur evaluates the deviations measured over a range of frequencies. Selection of an operating frequency to avoid acoustic resonance is based on an evaluation of the deviations, such as the frequency at which the lowest standard deviation occurs for the electrical parameter measured. Favorably, the electrical parameter used is the conductivity, which provides high insensitivity to noise, is independent of ballast topology, and enables detection of acoustic resonance at levels not visible to the human eye. A control scheme tracks acoustic resonance during run-up of the lamp and quickly selects a favorable operating frequency after the lamp reaches steady-state. Resonance detection is achieved both during run-up and the steady state substantially without inducing visible flicker. The method and ballast employ universal techniques suitable for operating HID lamps of different types, wattages and manufacturers despite the occurrence of acoustic resonance/arc instabilities among these lamps over a fairly broad frequency range.

A radiation beam is focused on a recording layer of a record carrier containing phase-change material. Crystalline information areas are written on initially amorphous portions of the recording layer by means of the radiation beam having its intensity modulated in accordance with write pulses. The information areas are erased (and changed back into amorphous portions) by means of the radiation beam having its intensity modulated in accordance with erase pulses. The time duration of each of the erase pulses (and, therefore, the intensity of the radiation beam being modulated in accordance therewith to heat the recording layer) and the cooling time of the recording layer thereafter is short enough that areas of the recording layer which are heated during erasing to a temperature above the crystallization temperature of the recording layer but lower than the melting point of the recording layer remain above the crystallization temperature for a period of time which is shorter than the crystallization time for the recording layer. The recording layer may contain a track and have more crystallization nuclei proximate to a centerline of the track than away from the centerline. In addition, the record carrier may be such that its reflection is larger when the recording layer has an amorphous structure than when it has a crystalline structure.

Recording and/or reading of information on an optical record carrier is effected by scanning such record carrier with a radiation beam which is focussed by an objective lens into a scanning spot of a size which is diffraction-limited by the aperture of the objective lens. The effective size of the scanning spot is considerably reduced by including a layer of non-linear optical material in the record carrier, such material having an optical characteristic which changes with changes in intensity of the radiation incident thereon. The read/write resolution of information on the record carrier is thereby substantially increased.
