An induction heating tool that holds voltage or current supplied to the induction tank circuit constant and tracks changes in the other of voltage or current during each induction heating cycle. The disclosed induction heating tool exploits the fact that the resistance an attachment plate increases along with the temperature of the attachment plate. During an induction heating cycle, the attachment plate is magnetically coupled to a work coil and the resistance of the attachment plate is reflected to the circuit. Changes in the resistance of the attachment plate alter the pattern of energy delivery from the work coil to the attachment plate in a predictable way. Calculations accurately predict the temperature of the attachment plate over a wide variety of ambient conditions, including the presence of moisture at the membrane/attachment plate interface. The disclosed induction heating tool produces consistent results without calibration for ambient conditions.

Temperature sensing induction heating tool

An induction heating tool has an induction heating coil configured to generate a magnetic field closely matched to the shape of the anchor plate. The induction heating tool includes a base configured to assist an operator in aligning the coil over each anchor plate. In the disclosed embodiments, the base supports a circular induction coil with a structure that clearly shows the position of the induction coil. In the disclosed embodiments, material surrounding the induction coil is removed or made transparent so the operator can see the roof immediately surrounding the induction coil as an additional aid in positioning the tool over anchor plates.

Stand-up induction heating tool for membrane roofing

A portable induction heating tool is provided as a membrane roofing tool for use in sealing anchor plates with a heat-activated adhesive to a membrane roofing member. The tool uses two different audible tones so two tools can be used simultaneously on a single roof, while allowing a user to easily distinguish between the operation of both tools. The main housing containing electronics is weather-tight, and requires no forced-cooling devices. The controller automatically performs data logging functions, such as counting the number of anchor plates per job or per day that have been properly placed, counting the number of activation events for a tool's life, tracking the number of faults which occur as the tool is being used, and the controller can identify the type of fault that occurs during operation of the tool. The controller also stores energy setting changes in memory.

Stand-up membrane roofing induction heating tool

A circuit fault detector and interrupter which consists of parallel current conduction paths, including a path through a mechanical contactor and a path through a power electronics switch. A fault can be detected by a fault detection circuit within 50 microseconds of the occurrence of the fault, causing the mechanical contactor to be opened and the fault current to be commutated via a laminated, low-inductance bus through the power electronics switch. The power electronics switch is thereafter turned off as soon as possible, interrupting the fault current. The fault current can be interrupted within 200 microseconds of the occurrence of the fault, and the device reduces or eliminates arcing when the mechanical contactor is opened.

A portable induction tool is provided for soldering or brazing sections of metal pipe together. A work coil head (with induction coil) is U-shaped, allowing placement of the head around lengths of pipe, heating a susceptor (e.g., the pipe) to form a joint, and then to be withdrawn after the pipe joint is made. In one form, the tool uses heat pipes to remove thermal energy from the head, and also a heat exchanger for higher-powered units. Power capacitors are generally included with the induction (work) coil to create a tank circuit of a resonant frequency. The induction coil uses Litz wire, copper tubing, or heat pipes with a conductive outer skin to carry the high-current being delivered to the induction coil. The induction coil has a general racetrack configuration, which is typically wound in a U-shape (or as a semicircle) as a single winding, with multiple turns.

An improved induction heating apparatus is provided for attaching membrane roofs. A top membrane layer is attached to attachment disks that hold sheets of thermal insulation to the top of roof substrates. The heating apparatus emits a magnetic field that raises the temperature of the disks and a heat-activated adhesive on top of the disks which, after cooling, becomes adhered to the bottom surface of the top membrane layer. The disks in turn are attached via fasteners to the substrate portion of the roof structure. The apparatus includes a set of bottom guides that allow a user to find the attachment disks mechanically, without actually seeing those disks beneath the top membrane layer. A fine locator circuit is provided, using a magnetic field, and the apparatus allows a user to stand upright while operating the apparatus.

A switching power supply which generates AC power, as opposed to DC power. A transistor opens and closes to thereby generate charge-discharge cycles through an inductor-resistor combination. Each charging current is compared with a reference waveform which changes slowly over time, compared with the opening and closing of the transistor. When each charging current exceeds the then-current value of the waveform, the transistor is opened, inducing a discharge cycle. This operation produces an output power waveform which is a replica of the reference waveform.

An electrical machine which has a rotor positioned within a housing. The rotor has a pair of spaced-apart engagement portions, which, preferably, are tapered. The engagement portions are engaged by collectors or brushes which are arranged in annular configuration around the engagement portions. Retainer support the collectors and serve as electrical conductors with respect to the collectors. Wick elements engage the tapered portions of the rotor adjacent the collectors and provide lubrication and coolant fluid to the collectors and to the surfaces of the engagement portions of the rotor. Actuator mechanisms continuously urge the retainer members and the collectors in an axial direction upon the engagement portions to automatically compensate for wearing action between the collectors and the engagement portions of the rotor. A stator encompasses the rotor to create a magnetic field which encompasses the rotor.
