A system and method that establishes a confidence in a vehicle position determined by a vehicle position determination system and uses the established confidence to change a behavior of an active suspension system of a plant in the vehicle.

Vehicle seat active suspension control based on vehicle position

Active vibration isolation (AVI) systems are becoming more available in various markets, one such market being vehicle operator seating. Unfamiliarity with the performance of such systems may cause users initial perceptions of system performance to be unfavorable. AVI systems can include a demonstration system capable of providing simulations too users of various types of vibration isolation systems under various input conditions, so that users can be introduced to the system benefits over other systems before using an AVI equipped product in its intended application.

Demonstrating an active vibration isolation system

Systems are described for converting the angular position of a shaft or an axle of a rotary motor to an analog or a digital code indicative of the angular position. The systems may include a magnetic disk encoded with first magnetic transitions and second magnetic transitions, where the first magnetic transitions are on a first circumference of the magnetic disk, the second magnetic transitions are on a second circumference of the magnetic disk, the first magnetic transitions represent regions on the magnetic disk, and the second magnetic transitions represent locations on the magnetic disk within each of the regions. The systems may include a first sensor to detect a region based on the first magnetic transitions and a second sensor to detect a location based on the second magnetic transitions. The systems may also include a decoder to identify an absolute location on the magnetic disk based on the region detected by the first sensor and the location detected by the second sensor.

Active vibration isolation (AVVI) systems are becoming more available in various markets, one such market being vehicle operator seating. An active suspension system for a suspended device. The system has an electromagnetic actuator that produces force on the suspended device and that is powered by a power source, and a control system that provides control signals that cause the electromagnetic actuator to exert force on the suspended device. The control system is adapted to receive a turn-off signal that results in disabling the electromagnetic actuator from producing force on the suspended device. When the control system receives a turn-off signal it provides actuator turn-off control signals that cause the force exerted by the electromagnetic actuator to progressively transition to zero over a transition time period.

A motion control system including components such as an accelerometer for detecting zero force positions and for self-calibrating the motion control system. The motion control system may be implemented in an active seat suspension.

Motion control system self-calibrating

An active suspension system includes a relative slow-responding force bias eliminator (such as a pneumatic actuator) and a relatively fast-responding actuator (such as an electromagnetic actuator) that together support a plant (such as a truck seat or vehicle cabin). The system also includes a load-unload detector (which may be a physical or virtual detector) to detect a loading or unloading of the plant. When such a loading or unloading is detected, the system causes the force bias eliminator to respond quickly (e.g., as quick as possible) while controlling the fast-responding actuator so as to preserve the available energy for operating the actuator (e.g., so as to keep the fast-responding actuator from consuming all of its available energy) prior to when the force bias eliminator can respond.

Loading and unloading stabilization in an active suspension system

To determine the relative position of movable portions of an assembly, a first magnetic device is coupled to a first portion of the assembly. The first magnetic device has a sensing surface with a number of magnetic poles that provide a magnetization state transition location. An absolute position sensor with a two-state output is coupled to the assembly adjacent the first magnetic device. The output state changes when a magnetization state transition of the first magnetic device moves past the absolute position sensor. A second magnetic device is coupled to the assembly. The second magnetic device creates a cyclically-varying magnetic field proximate its sensing surface. An incremental position sensor is coupled to the assembly adjacent the second magnetic device, and has an output that varies continuously relative to magnetic field angle over at least a portion of one cycle of the cyclically-varying magnetic field of the second magnetic device.
