An elevator machine () includes a machine shaft () and a sheave () that rotates with the machine shaft (). A motor () selectively rotates the machine shaft (). A brake () having at least one brake armature () selectively moves a brake rotor () coupled for rotation with the shaft () between a braking position and a released position. An elevator brake () rotor for use in an elevator machine () includes a non-metallic elevator brake hub () and a metal flange (), both of which have an opening with a splined portion for guiding axial movement of the rotor along a rotable shaft (). This arrangement reduces metal-to-metal contact between the rotor and shaft and reduces noise.

An elevator disc brake is rigidly attached to a shaft attaching to an elevator sheave. The disc brake includes a rotating disc and a non-rotating plate, the plate being driven towards the disc by a plurality of springs and moved away from the disc an electromagnet.
