A method of monitoring smoke, fire, and temperature conditions includes transmitting light through a first fiber optic cable, the fiber optic cable terminating at a node disposed to monitor a smoke or fire condition at one or more predetermined areas, transmitting light along a second fiber optic cable, the second fiber optic cable arranged to monitor a temperature condition at one or more predetermined areas, receiving scattered light from the first fiber optic cable and/or the second fiber optic cable at a control system, and analyzing the scattered light to determine at least one of the presence and magnitude of smoke, fire and/or a temperature condition along the fiber harness or at the node.

Fiber optic based smoke and/or overheat detection and monitoring for aircraft

In accordance with at least one aspect of this disclosure, an ultraviolet radiation (UV) sensor includes a UV sensitive material and a first electrode and a second electrode connected in series through the UV sensitive material such that UV radiation can reach the UV sensitive material. The UV sensitive material can include at least one of zinc tin oxide, magnesium oxide, magnesium zinc oxide, or zinc oxide. The electrodes can be interdigitated comb electrodes.

Radiation sensors

A detection system for measuring the presence of one or more conditions in a predetermined area includes a fiber harness having at least one fiber optic cable for transmitting light. The at least one fiber optic cable defines a node arranged to measure the one or more conditions. The node is arranged such that light scattered by an atmosphere adjacent the node is received by at least one core of the fiber optic cable. A control system operably connected to the fiber harness includes a light source for transmitting light to the node and a light sensitive device configured to receive scattered light associated with the node. The control system analyzes more than one signal corresponding to more than one wavelength of the scattered light associated with the node to determine at least one of a presence and magnitude of the one or more conditions at the node.

High sensitivity fiber optic based detection

A floor panel includes a first structural layer, a film heater configured to emit far-infrared radiation, and a first open cell layer disposed between the film heater and the first structural layer such that far infrared radiation from the film heater is directed toward the first open cell layer.

Carbon nanotube heaters for aircraft heated floor panels

A gas sensor includes a housing () having disposed therein a membrane electrode assembly comprising a sensing electrode (), a counter electrode (), and a solid polymer electrolyte () disposed between the sensing electrode and the counter electrode. The sensing electrode comprises a first catalyst comprising noble metal nanoparticles (). The counter electrode comprises a second catalyst comprising noble metal nanoparticles (), which can be of the same composition or a different composition as the first catalyst. The sensor housing also includes an opening () in fluid communication with the sensing electrode for test gas to contact the sensing electrode. The sensor also includes an electrical circuit () connecting the sensing electrode and the counter electrode.

Gas sensor for detecting hydrocarbons

A system for monitoring smoke and/or temperature of an electronic device includes a fiber harness having at least one fiber optic cable terminating at a node. The node is located to measure one or more conditions at the electronic device, and a control system operably connected to the fiber harness. The control system includes a light source configured to transmit light through the fiber harness, a light sensitive device configured to receive scattered light associated with the node, and a control unit configured to analyze the scattered light to determine at least one of a presence and magnitude of the one or more conditions at the node of one or more conditions at the electronic device, wherein the control unit is further configured to transmit a signal in response to the one or more conditions, wherein the one or more conditions are one or more of smoke, fire, and temperature.

Fiber optic based monitoring of temperature and/or smoke conditions at electronic components

A method for monitoring an area includes distributing, by a detector unit, light during a first instance of time in order to characterize the area based on first data associated with the first instance of time; distributing, by the detector unit, light during at least a second instance of time in order to obtain second data; comparing a first portion of the second data to at least one of: a second portion of the second data and the first data; and based on the comparison, signaling an alarm condition by the detector unit when an evolution in the second data is detected in an amount greater than a threshold.

Encoder-less lidar positioning technique for detection and alarm

A gas sensor for detecting one or more contaminants in a refrigerant includes a housing having disposed therein a membrane electrode assembly comprising a sensing electrode, a counter electrode, and a solid polymer electrolyte disposed between the sensing electrode and the counter electrode. The sensing electrode comprises nanoparticles of a first catalyst comprising noble metal. The counter electrode comprises nanoparticles of a second catalyst comprising noble metal. The sensing electrode in the sensor has been preconditioned by exposure under a positive voltage bias to a preconditioning gas comprising the contaminant(s) or their precursors or derivatives.

Detection of refrigerant contaminants

An acoustic wave generator including a stack having a plurality of first layers configured to receive electrical and/or magnetic energy and a plurality of second layers configured in contact with the plurality of first layers, the plurality of second layers comprising one or more materials configured to change mechanical properties when electrical and/or magnetic energy is applied thereto. The generator further having at least one source configured in operational communication with the plurality of first layers and configured to supply at least one of phased electrical and/or magnetic energy to the plurality of first layers, wherein the stack is configured to (i) generate phased acoustic energy and (ii) at least one of amplify and store the generated phased acoustic energy in a first state and release said generator acoustic energy in a second state.

Coherent acoustic wave generation

A reformer system () having a hydrodesulfurizer () provides desulfurized natural gas feedstock to a catalytic steam reformer (), the outflow of which is treated by a water gas shift reactor () and optionally a preferential CO oxidizer () to provide reformate gas () having high hydrogen and moderate carbon dioxide content. To avoid damage to the hydrodesulfurizer from overheating, any deleterious hydrogen reactants, such as the oxygen in peak shave gas or olefins, in the non-desulfurized natural gas feedstock () are reacted () with hydrogen () to convert them to alkanes (e.g., ethylene and propylene to ethane and propane) and to convert oxygen to water in a catalytic reactor () having no sulfide sorbent, and cooled (), below a temperature which would damage the reactor, by evaporative cooling with pressurized hot water (). Hydrogen for the desulfurizer and the hydrogen reactions may be provided as recycle reformate () or from a mini-CPO (), or from other sources.

Fuel processing of feedstocks having components harmful to hydrodesulfurization

A gas sensor includes a housing having disposed therein a membrane electrode assembly comprising a sensing electrode, a counter electrode, and a polymer membrane disposed between the sensing electrode and the counter electrode. The polymer membrane comprises an ionic liquid retained therein. The sensor also includes a catalyst support that can be stable in a range of potentials to allow for detection mode and catalyst regeneration mode to be operative. The sensor further includes a circuitry and algorithm to implement the catalyst regeneration mechanism electrochemically. The sensor further includes a chamber for reference gas to which the counter electrode is exposed, and a chamber for test gas to which a gas to be tested is exposed. The sensor also includes a pathway for test gas to enter the chamber and a measured electrical circuit connecting the sensing electrode and the counter electrode.

Regenerative gas sensor

A microelectromechanical system (MEMS) assembly includes at least one emission source; a top wafer having a plurality of side walls and a generally horizontal portion, the horizontal portion having a thickness between a first side and a directly opposed second side, at least one window in the horizontal portion extending between the first and second sides and a transmission membrane across the at least one window; and a bottom wafer having a first portion with a first substantially planar surface, an intermediate surface directly opposed to the first substantially planar surface, a second portion with a second substantially planar surface, the at least one emission source provided on the second substantially planar surface; where the top wafer bonds to the bottom wafer at the intermediate surface and encloses a cavity within the top wafer and the bottom wafer.

Two-wafer MEMS ionization device

A sodium chloride electrolysis cell () receives a portion of its electrical power () from a phosphoric acid fuel cell () which receives fuel at its anode inlet () from a water cooled catalytic reactor () that converts oxygen in the byproduct output () of the sodium chlorate electrolysis cell to hydrogen and water.
