An optical beam steering device and a method for beam steering are described. The optical beam steering device including: a laser source coupled to an optical phased array (OPA) The OPA includes: a beam splitter network optically coupled to the laser source and configured to split a laser beam generated by the laser source into N outputs to generate an output optical beam; a first network of first phase shifters configured to steer the output optical beam in a first direction away from a longitude direction; and a second network of second phase shifters configured to steer the output optical beam in a second direction away from the longitude direction, the second direction being opposite to the first direction.

Phase shifter architecture for optical beam steering devices

A device includes an optical resonator having four ports including a first port, a second port, a third port, and a fourth port. A first electronic circuit is configured to calculate a first information representative of a power difference between optical signals supplied by two of the four ports. A method of operating a device is also disclosed.

A device includes a first directional coupler and a second directional coupler. A first arched waveguide forms a first curved optical path between a first output port of the first directional coupler and a first input port of the second directional coupler. The first arched waveguide has an angle of curvature and a radius of curvature. A second arched waveguide has the angle of curvature and the radius of curvature. The first arched waveguide and the second arched waveguide each have a concavity oriented in the same direction. A first straight waveguide is coupled to a second output port of the first directional coupler and a first end of the second arched waveguide. A method includes providing a semiconductor body comprising a surface with a recessed portion therein. The recessed portion includes a bottom surface. Optical waveguide cores in a first array of optical waveguide cores extend side-by-side at the bottom surface. The method further includes providing a second array of optical waveguide cores over the first array of optical waveguide cores. Optical waveguide cores in the second array of optical waveguide cores extend side-by-side. Each optical waveguide core in the second array of optical waveguide cores is in an adiabatic coupling relationship with a corresponding optical waveguide core in the first array of optical waveguide cores. The method also includes applying an optical waveguide cladding material over the second array of optical waveguide cores.

A system for detecting objects, for driver assistance equipment in motor vehicles for example, includes a transmitter for transmitting towards an object an optical signal having a signal energy. The optical signal transmitted includes at least one encoded pulse sequence with the signal energy distributed over the pulse sequence. A receiver receives an echo signal resulting from reflection of the optical signal at the object with the time delay of the echo signal is indicative of the distance to the object.

A semiconductor chip provides an optical medium for light propagation. The semiconductor chip includes a chip surface with an outer perimeter and a cavity in the chip surface. The cavity includes a peripheral wall and a bottom surface surrounded by the peripheral wall, the bottom surface adiabatically couplable to an optical waveguide. The cavity is located at an area of the chip surface spaced from the outer perimeter thereof.

The system includes a multi-substrate electro-optical structure for communications with CMOS and/or BiCMOS IC chips of a PCB. The multi-chip module primary substrate implements high frequency electrical interconnections between transceiver circuit chips, mounted on the silicon photonic interposer, and the IC chips.

The invention relates to a process for manufacturing an integrated optical device comprising the deposition on a support substrate of a multilayer being formed by first and second cladding layers in order to hold in a multilayer first region a waveguide core layer. The core is provided with an electromagnetic radiation (L) inlet/outlet port. Furthermore, the process provides for the formation of a regulation layer having a first etching speed associated therewith, which is distinguished from the etching speeds of the cladding layers. Subsequently to an etching of a multilayer second region, a cavity is obtained having a first wall which is inclined relative to the substrate at least partially extending in said first region and which is near said inlet/outlet port. Such etching removes portions of the regulation layer and the cladding layers at different speeds in order to result in the formation of the inclined wall.
