Catalyst precursors comprising Mg, Cl, Ti, and OR groups that are in molar ratios defined by the formula MgClTi(OR)in which n is from 0.3 to less than 1.7, p is lower than 0.6, the molar ratio (OR)/Cl is lower than 4 and R is C1-C15 hydrocarbon groups. The said precursor, just upon activation with organo-Al compounds, are able to advantageously polymerize ethylene and alpha olefins, and that upon reaction with halogenating compounds generate in high yields catalyst components with high polymerization activity particularly in the polymerization of propylene also in combination with 1,3-diethers.

Process for modifying the relative ratios of the components of a liquid starting mixture of specific diastereoisomers, containing at least two asymmetric carbon atoms comprising contacting said liquid mixture with a Lewis acid compound capable of co-ordinating a compound having at least two Lewis basic functionalities and subjecting the resulting mixture to conditions such that a reaction product, having a molar ratio between its diastereoisomeric components different from the corresponding molar ratio in the said liquid starting mixture, becomes separated from the said liquid mixture, said process being carried out using an amount of said Lewis acid not enough to co-ordinate the total amount of the diastereoisomeric components of the liquid starting mixture. This method shows an excellent balance of efficiency and easiness of procedure that cannot be reached with the physical methods of diastereoisomers separation known in the art.

The present invention relates to a solid catalyst component for the polymerization of olefins CH.sub.2 .dbd.CHR in which R is hydrogen or a hydrocarbyl radical with 1-12 carbon atoms, comprising a titanium compound, having at least a Ti-halogen bond and an electron donor compound supported on a Mg halide, in which said electron donor compound is selected from esters of malonic acids of formula (I): ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 is a C.sub.5 -C.sub.20 linear or branched alkyl, a C.sub.5 -C.sub.20 cycloalkyl, a C.sub.7 -C.sub.20 arylalkyl or alkylaryl group; R.sub.2 and R.sub.3, equal to or different from each other, are C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 alkyl, cycloalkyl. Said catalyst components when used in the polymerization of olefins, and in particular of propylene, are capable to give high yields and polymers having high insolubility in xylene.
