An apparatus for friction welding a first element to a second element includes a forge assembly having a table defining a platform, a crank, a forge link and a reaction link disposed oppositely of the forge link relative to the platform. Various construction details are disclosed that provide a friction welder that minimizes bending in the forge and motion planes and enhances repeatability of the welds performed. In a specific embodiment, the friction welder may be used in a method to form integrally bladed rotors and further includes a reciprocal motion assembly adapted to generate motion between the elements being welded, a gripper and an base tool. The reciprocal motion assembly includes a servo hydraulic actuator having a hydraulic column frequency greater than the frequency of reciprocation. The gripper is a device for use with bonding an airfoil to the rotor. The base tool is a device for mounting and positioning the rotor for the bonding operations.

Friction welder

A durable low weight compressor having improved performance is disclosed. The compressor includes a fiber reinforced resin matrix composite housing and a fiber reinforced glass marix composite compression chamber liner. An air conditioner including an improved compressor is also disclosed.

Hybrid composite compressor

Required preloading of a valve closing spring (80) in a pressure operated, fluid handling device (10) is determined by mechanically precompressing the spring, applying operating pressure to the device and relieving the bias on the spring until the operating pressure opens the valve, the thickness of a shim (75) for effecting such preloading being equal to the difference between the change in spring length due to the precompression thereof and the change in spring length due to relief of the precompression prior to spring opening.

Method and apparatus for determining spring preloading in a fluid

The object of the invention is to provide a system and apparatus which employs laser cutting to disassemble a nuclear core fuel subassembly. The apparatus includes a gantry frame (C) which straddles the core fuel subassembly (14), an x-carriage (22) travelling longitudinally above the frame which carries a focus head assembly (D) having a vertically moving carriage (46) and a laterally moving carriage (52), a system of laser beam transferring and focusing mirrors carried by the x-carriage and focusing head assembly, and a shroud follower (F) and longitudinal follower (G) for following the shape of shroud (14) to maintain a beam focal point (44) fixed upon the shroud surface for accurate cutting.
