A method includes: selecting a set of access points in a focus zone that identifies an area around the travel destination; determining access paths through one or more access points in the set of selected access points; listing crossings that the access paths pass through; for each of the listed crossings: determining a probability that the listed crossing is passed through by an access path; determining at least one complexity score of the listed crossing; determining a set of points of interest (POIs) along access paths passing through the listed crossing; and determining quality scores for the POIs, respectively, the quality score of one of the POIs reflecting a utility of that one of the POIs to facilitate orientation; selecting POIs from the set of POIs based on the quality scores; generating the access map including the access paths and the selected POIs; and outputting the access map.

A system and method are provided for refining a user's query. An entity index, generated from a corpus of text documents, is provided. The entity index includes a set of entity structures, each including a plurality of terms. Each of the terms of an entity structure is a feature of the same entity. Entity structures can be retrieved from the entity index which match at least a portion of the user's query. Clusters of the retrieved entity structures are identified which have at least one of their terms in common. A cluster hierarchy is generated from the identified clusters in which nodes of the hierarchy are defined by one or more of the terms of the retrieved entity structures. At least a portion of the cluster hierarchy is presented to the user for facilitating refinement of the user's query through user selection of a node which, when formulated as a search, retrieves one or more responsive documents from the corpus of documents.

A communication system and apparatus for a xerographic imaging system for enhanced collaborative communication between the machine user and the remote troubleshooting advisor. The machine includes an imager for showing a selected virtual representation of the machine including an image of the machine illustrating an area of the machine having the troubleshooting need. A communication link exists between the user and the advisor and comprises a bi-directional visualization of a selected virtual representation synchronously displayed to the user and the advisor via respective imagers. An image adjuster is operated by the expert for selective adjustment of the virtual representation to suggest a section of the area of the machine wherein action by the machine user may resolve the troubleshooting need. The selective adjustment is communicated to the machine user through the communication link whereby upon viewing this suggested adjustment, corrective action is suggested to the user. The corrective action is identified to the user by identifying a difference between the actual machine state and the shared virtual representation. The visual indicators may direct the user to a particular location and percussion centers on the machine identify a particular tapping location by the user to verify position identification to the troubleshooting expert.

Bi-directional remote visualization for supporting collaborative machine troubleshooting

A system for providing item recommendations includes a memory, a device, responsive to a user request, for recording an item on a hardcopy medium, and a processor, for storing ratings of items and for generating recommendations for new items based on recommendation criteria. In response to the user request, the processor stores an implicit rating for the requested item in the memory, determines whether, based on the implicit rating and the recommendation criteria, to generate an item recommendation, and if the criteria for generating a recommendation is met, generates a recommendation of a new item. The recommender system may further store a representation of the recorded item in the memory. Recommendations may be based on item to item similarities, item to user similarities or user to user similarities.

An electronic board system includes an electronic board having a screen for displaying information of interest to a work group or community, an input device for receiving information from users in a group or community to be displayed on the electronic board, a memory for storing information received from the input device and a processor for selecting which information stored in the memory to display on the screen, where and how to display the selected information on the screen and displaying the selected information on the screen. The processor selects which information to display in accordance with a predetermined relationship based on a group-based recommendation criteria and user interest. A plurality of sensors disposed behind the screen detect user interest in information displayed on the screen near the sensor. User interest may also be determined by monitoring user requests for copies of information displayed on the screen.

Flexible rule-based recommender system for use with an electronic board system

The system and method analyzes activities of users in a recommender system to identify experts. Two types of experts may be identified: authoritative experts and hub experts. An authoritative expert is a user who creates items or documents in a given field that are acted upon by a large number of users within a community who are well connected in the given field. A hub expert is a user who is aware of important items or documents within a given field and uses, works or acts upon items or documents produced by authoritative experts. The system and method also identifies authoritative items (e.g., documents). A system for ranking search results obtained from an information retrieval system includes a search pre-processor, a search engine and a search post-processor. The search preprocessor determines the context of the search query by comparing the terms in the search query with a predetermined user context profile. Preferably, the context profile is a user profile or a community profile, which includes a set of terms which have been rated by the user, community, or a recommender system. The search engine generates a search result comprising at least one item obtained from the information retrieval system. The search post-processor ranks each item returned in the search result in accordance with the context of the search query.
