A baling press for pressing waste materials such as refuse into bales comprises a pressing box, a filler shaft for feeding waste material to be pressed from above into the pressing box and a plunger having a driving mechanism for moving it laterally into the pressing box to press material in the box. An inclined material inlet chute leads into the filler shaft and a material preparation device for loosening or separating the waste material is provided at the bottom of the chute; the preparation device comprises a rotor having shredding teeth for engaging waste material from the chute and the rotor is mounted to rotate about a stationary horizontal axis which extends across the bottom of the chute. The rotor is driven in a direction such that the shredding teeth of the rotor move upwardly adjacent the chute. Preferably the chute is adjustable in position to enable it to be moved bodily or to be pivoted upwards and downwards so that the position at which an imaginary extension of the chute intersects the rotor can be adjusted.

A method of binding pressed bales in a pressing channel of a baling press in which the ends of two wires which form the binding are fastened together by two twist connections which are spaced apart from each other comprises the improvement of the step of pulling back one of the two wires after the twist connections have been made and the wires have been severed between the two twist connections in such a way that as the next bale is pressed in the channel, the first twist connection lies at the front edge of a longitudinal face of the bale and a second twist connection, which is subsequently formed, lies at the rear edge of the same longitudinal face. A baling press for carrying out this method comprises a conventional pressing channel with a plunger together with a conventional device for forming the wire bindings around the bales as they are pressed, but this binding device incorporates the improvement comprising a pulling member which engages one of the wires and pulls this wire back after the two wires have been severed so that the twist connection between the two wires is then located in a position such that it comes into contact with the next bale to be pressed in the pressing channel at the front edge of a longitudinal face of the bale.

Apparatus for binding bales by winding a filament, such as a wire or similar device thereabout, is provided with a twisting head which operates to twist together the ends of a binding filament after the filament has been wound around a bale. As the twisting operation is performed, tensile forces developed in the twisted filament may cause rupture of the filament. To avoid such rupture, the twisting head is resiliently mounted to enable absorption of the filament tensile forces thereby to avoid undesired rupture of the filament.

A baling press especially for fibrous materials comprises a press box with a filler box located above it, a plunger for moving the material to be baled out of the filler box into the press box, and retaining fingers which prevent material moved by the plunger from returning. The filler box has two opposite fixed walls and two hinged opposite walls which are located between the fixed walls and which are capable of pivoting through a small angle relative to the axis of the press box when the plunger is withdrawn. The axes of the hinges of the hinged walls are fixed and extend transversely to the axis of the press box, so that, in use, material to be baled is fed through the filler box with its hinged walls inclined to the axis of the press box, and then with the hinged walls of the filler box aligned with the press box the plunger moves the material from the filler box into the press box.
