A combined cellular/GNSS (global navigation satellite systems) antenna is provided. The combined cellular/GNSS antenna comprises an external area and an internal area delineated by a circumference of a circle. The combined cellular GNSS antenna further comprises a cellular antenna and a GNSS antenna. The cellular antenna comprises a set of cellular radiators disposed in the external area and connected to a cellular feeding network for excitation of the set of cellular radiators. The GNSS antenna comprises radiation elements disposed in the internal area and has a center located substantially at a center of the circle.

Compact combined cellular/GNSS antenna with low mutual coupling

An antenna comprising a ground plane, a composite radiation patch, and an excitation circuit is described herein. The composite radiation patch is disposed on a printed circuit board and comprises a conducting plate and a plurality of conductive strips. The composite radiation patch comprises an outer region and an inner region separated by a circle of a given radius. The conducting plate comprises 1) a first set of arcuate slots disposed on the circle and 2) a second set of slots each contacting an external perimeter of the conducting plate at one end and a corresponding slot of the first set of arcuate slots at another end. The plurality of conductive strips is disposed within the outer region of the composite radiation patch, with one or more of the plurality of conductive strips galvanically contacting the conducting plate. The excitation circuit is disposed on the printed circuit board for exciting a right hand circularly polarized wave. The excitation circuit comprises a plurality of microstrip lines and a feeding network to which the plurality of microstrip lines are connected.

Low-cost compact circularly polarized patch antenna with slot excitation for GNSS applications

A GNSS-UHF antenna, including a first PCB having four sets of radiating elements, a second PCB below the first PCB, a metal plate below the second PCB, which form a quadrifilar helical antenna for operating with right-hand circularly polarized GNSS signals and simultaneously form a monopole antenna for operating with linearly polarized UHF signals; for each set of radiating elements, a corresponding downward-extending conductor connected to the second PCB at a first end and connected to the set of radiating elements at a second end through an inductor; a first coaxial cable outputting GNSS signals; the first cable includes a partial loop between the second shield and the metal plate; and a second cable outputting the UHF and its braiding connected to the metal plate.

Compact integrated GNSS-UHF antenna system

A GNSS compact antenna comprising a conducting ground plane and a driven element for exciting right hand circularly polarized waves having a multi-segment structure such that the area around the driven element is divided into elementary cells with conductors and circuit elements arranged therein. The antenna includes a set of circuit elements connecting the neighboring elementary cells and the driven element. Each elementary cell has a horizontal conductor over the ground plane, and each elementary cell can have a vertical conductor and a circuit element connecting the horizontal and vertical conductors. The horizontal conductor comprises a set of characteristic points to which circuit elements, connecting neighboring elementary cells or any elementary cell and the driven element, are connected. Both the impedance of each circuit elements and the design of each elementary cell can be different, but the antenna has four-fold rotational symmetry relative to the vertical axis.

Compact antenna having three-dimensional multi-segment structure

A broadband quadruple helical circularly-polarized antenna for receiving circularly polarized GNSS signals includes a dielectric cylinder oriented along a vertical axis; four spiral conductors wrapped around the cylinder; the four spiral conductors divided into an upper longitudinal section and a lower longitudinal section; and inductors connecting corresponding spiral conductors of the top and lower longitudinal sections. The spiral conductors in each section have a constant winding angle around the cylinder. The winding angle of all of the conductors in the same longitudinal section is the same. The winding angle of the upper longitudinal section is smaller than the winding angle of the bottom longitudinal. An excitation circuit is connected to the conductors. A third longitudinal section is below the lower longitudinal section, wherein the third longitudinal section includes conductors wound in an opposite direction relative to the lower longitudinal section.

Broadband helical antenna with cutoff pattern

An antenna system includes an electromagnetic radiator assembled on a ground plane. The ground plane containing a nontransparent area in a center of the ground plane and a semitransparent area surrounding the nontransparent area. The nontransparent area is circular in shape. The semitransparent area is generally circular in shape and contains at least one slot. A plurality of vertical conducting elements are in proximity of a boundary between the nontransparent area and the semitransparent area on a bottom side of the ground plane. The vertical conducting elements are arranged in a circle around a center of the electromagnetic radiator.

GNSS base station antenna system with reduced sensitivity to reflections from nearby objects

An antenna includes a planar ground plane, a planar exciter, and a plurality of passive elements. The planar ground plane and the planar exciter are disposed orthogonal to a longitudinal axis of the antenna. The planar exciter is spaced apart from the ground plane. The planar exciter is configured to excite right-hand circularly-polarized electromagnetic radiation. The planar exciter is configured to excite first currents orthogonal to the longitudinal axis and substantially no current parallel to the longitudinal axis. The plurality of passive elements is symmetrically disposed azimuthally about the longitudinal axis and spaced apart from the planar exciter. The plurality of passive elements is electromagnetically coupled to the planar exciter. The plurality of passive elements is configured to excite second currents parallel to the longitudinal axis and third currents orthogonal to the longitudinal axis.

Compact broadband antenna system with enhanced multipath rejection

A broadband quadruple helical circularly-polarized antenna for receiving GNSS signals comprises an excitation circuit and a set of quadruple spiral elements. Each quadruple spiral element consists of four conductors. Each conductor is a one spiral turn of the quadruple spiral element. Said conductors have equal winding angle. The winding angle of all conductors does not change in the same quadruple spiral element. Conductors of neighboring (longitudinally) quadruple spiral elements have different winding angles. The antenna provides a sharp drop in AP at angles near the horizon and a small AP level in the lower hemisphere.

An antenna is configured to operate with circularly-polarized electromagnetic radiation in a low-frequency band and in a high-frequency band. The antenna comprises a ground plane and a radiator. The radiator comprises four pairs of radiating elements disposed as pairs of spiral segments on a cylindrical surface having a longitudinal axis orthogonal to the ground plane. Each pair of radiating elements comprises a low-frequency radiating element and a high-frequency radiating element. The low-frequency radiating element comprises a low-frequency conductive strip. The high-frequency radiating element comprises an electrically-connected series of at least one high-frequency conductive strip and at least one high-frequency capacitor. The electrical path lengths of the low-frequency radiating elements and the electrical path lengths of the high-frequency radiating elements are equal.

Compact antenna system with reduced multipath reception

A dual-frequency patch antenna includes a ground plane, an inside radiator, and an outside radiator. The inside radiator is configured as a region with a periphery, along which is a series of first protrusions separated by first grooves. The outside radiator is configured as a ring with an outer periphery and an inner periphery, along which is a series of second protrusions separated by second grooves. A set of conducting elements electrically connect the series of second protrusions with the ground plane. The inside radiator and the outside radiator can be fabricated on a dielectric substrate separated from the ground plane by a dielectric solid or air. The inside radiator and the outside radiator can be disposed on the same surface or on different surfaces of the dielectric substrate, with specific geometries of the first protrusions and first grooves relative to the second protrusions and second grooves.

Compact dual-frequency patch antenna

Disclosed is a micropatch antenna comprising a radiating element and a ground plane separated by an air gap. Small size, light weight, wide bandwidth, and wide directional pattern are achieved without the introduction of a high-permittivity dielectric substrate. Capacitive elements are configured along the perimeter of at least one of the radiating element and ground plane. Capacitive elements may comprise extended continuous structures or a series of localized structures. The geometry of the radiating element, ground plane, and capacitive elements may be varied to suit specific applications, such as linearly-polarized or circularly-polarized electromagnetic radiation.

Disclosed is a circularly-polarized antenna comprising a flat conducting ground plane, a radiator, and an excitation system disposed between the radiator and the ground plane. The radiator comprises a plurality of conducting segments separated from each other by a first dielectric medium and separated from the ground plane by a second dielectric medium. The plurality of conducting segments are symmetrically disposed about an antenna axis of symmetry orthogonal to the ground plane. The excitation system comprises a flat conducting exciter patch and four excitation sources with phase differences of 0, 90, 180, and 270 degrees. The excitation sources are generated on two orthogonal printed circuit boards.

Compact circularly-polarized antenna with expanded frequency bandwidth

A ground plane for reducing multipath reception comprises a convex conducting surface and an array of conducting elements disposed on at least a portion of the convex conducting surface. Embodiments of the convex conducting surface include a portion of a sphere and a sphere. Each conducting element comprises an elongated body structure having a transverse dimension and a length, wherein the transverse dimension is substantially less than the length. The cross-section of the elongated body structure can have various user-specified shapes. Each conducting element can further comprise a tip structure. The azimuth spacings, lengths, and surface densities of the conducting elements can be functions of meridian angle. An antenna can be mounted directly on the conducting convex surface or on a conducting or dielectric support structure mounted on the conducting convex surface. System components, such as a navigation receiver, can be mounted inside the conducting convex surface.

Broadband convex ground planes for multipath rejection

A micropatch antenna system with simultaneous high bandwidth and low sensitivity to multipath radiation is achieved by positioning a radiating element within a cavity in a ground plane. Bandwidth and sensitivity to multipath radiation may be varied by varying the height of the radiating element above the bottom of the cavity and above the top of the ground plane. The electromagnetic and physical characteristics of the antenna system may be further controlled by introducing dielectric solids or wave-slowing structures between the bottom of the cavity and the radiating element. A dual-band micropatch antenna system with simultaneous high bandwidth and low sensitivity to multipath radiation may be similarly configured by stacking a second radiating element on top of the first radiating element.
