Among other things, one or more systems and/or techniques are described for shaping a profile of radiation attenuation in a fan-angle direction via a pre-object filter (e.g., a bowtie filter) based upon a profile of an object. For example, a pre-object filter may be at least partially rotated about a filter axis and/or may be translated in a direction parallel to a direction of conveyance of the object under examination to adjust a profile of radiation attenuation in the fan-angle direction. Further, in one embodiment, the profile of radiation attenuation may be reshaped during rotation of the radiation source about the object to adjust an amount of radiation attenuation in the fan-angle direction (e.g., to adjust a profile of radiation attenuation as a shape of the object changes from a perspective of a radiation source as the radiation source is rotated about the object).

Among other things, one or more techniques and/or systems are described for defining imaging modes and for operating a photon counting radiation imaging system. A set of imaging modes with different counting schemes may be defined such that counting schemes will count detection events of a set of radiation events in different manners. For example, a first counting scheme may count primary detection events in a primary counter and secondary detection events in a secondary counter. A second counting scheme may count primary and secondary detection events in the primary counter. A third counting scheme may merely count detection events occurring within a primary detector cell associated with the primary counter. A fourth counting scheme may combine energy of detection events into merged energy. A selected imaging mode may be applied to the photon counting radiation imaging system in order to achieve desired image scanning characteristics (e.g., spatial resolution, dose savings, spectral ability).

Photon counting imaging modes

Among other things, one or more techniques and/or systems are described for generating an output of a detector cell of a photon counting detector array. A counter block generates integration data and photon counting data associated with the photon counting detector array. Responsive to a number of detection events counted during a measurement interval (e.g., a view) not exceeding a first detection event count threshold, a first output may be generated based upon the photon counting data. Responsive to the number of detection events exceeding a second detection event count threshold, a second output may be generated based upon the integration data. Responsive to the number of detection events being between the first detection event count threshold and the second detection event count threshold, a blended output may be generated based upon the photon counting data and the integration data.

A method and system for generating a field of view extension of a CT scan and minimizing the effect of interfering objects is described. The system is configured and the method carries out the steps of generating a full sinogram based upon CT scan data of a scanned object and any interfering objects within the scanning field; determining the location of any interfering objects within the CT data based on physical and geometrical properties of the interfering objects; generating an ideal sinogram of any interfering objects based on their location and physical properties; subtracting the ideal sinogram from the full sinogram; extending a sinogram free of any interfering objects; and adding the ideal sinogram of interfering objects to the extended sinogram of the scanned object. Speeding up the computation of the extended sinogram by creating a look-up table of the tunable parameter of the extension function.

Extension of the field of view of a computed tomography system in the presence of interfering objects

A method of and a system for detecting anomalies in projection images generated by CT scanners are provided. One type of anomaly of particular interest is bright or/and dark dots in projection images, which correspond to streak artifacts in the CT images. The method for detecting such bright or/and dark dots in projection images comprises: generating projection images; computing a CFAR distance map; computing a preliminary dot map; generating dot histograms; and detecting bright dots or/and dark dots based on the generated histograms.
