A specimen holder for freezing water-containing preparations under high pressure is disclosed. The specimen holder possesses a housing sheath in which a cutout is provided. A specimen retention element is arranged in the cutout of the specimen holder, and can be sprayed with a coolant, from both sides, through the cutout. A device for forming two triangular glass knives from a glass square, such as for ultramicrotomy, has a rotary table and a holding device for receiving, aligning, and fixing the glass square to be broken positioned on the rotary table. The holding device has two opposingly arranged clamping jaws of U-shaped profile for holding the glass square therebetween arranged on the rotary table. The rotary table's axis of rotation is aligned with the center of the glass square held between the clamping jaws. A scoring and breaking device is positioned above the table alignable with the glass square.

The invention relates to a microtome having a blade oscillating transverse to the direction of advancing the cut, for sections on soft tissue samples. The oscillation frequency of the blade is controlled variably by the rotational speed of an electric motor. At the same time, the oscillation amplitude of the blade is also adjustable variably with the aid of an adjustable eccentric or a displacement device. This makes individual adjustment to the consistency of the tissue sample possible, which leads to improved quality of the microtome sections, in particular to a reduction in the waviness of the sections. This makes significantly thinner microtome sections possible, with corresponding advantages during microscopy.

A microtome, or an ultramicrotome having the specimen arm operating through an opening in the cryo chamber wall in a manner substantially free of the mechanical influence of a conventional seal is disclosed. An elongated slot permits movement of the specimen arm while minimizing the clearance between the sides of the arm and chamber wall reduces loss. Inner and outer baffles can be used to further reduce loss.
