The present invention provides aqueous flesh coating compositions comprising one or more aqueous acid-functional acrylic or vinyl copolymer and from 0.03 and up to 1.0 equivalent, based on equivalents of carboxylic acid in the polymer, of one or more active compound chosen from an aminoguanidine, semicarbazide, dihydrazide, guanamine, hydrazine and a salt thereof. Further, the invention provides methods of applying the coating composition to leather crust or to tanned leather, and to the flesh coated leather or coated leather crust produced thereby. The leather crust and tanned leather produced by the invention, for example fleshcoated or finished leather, will emit greatly reduced levels of aldehydes over time and especially valuable in scrubbing aldehydes from perforated leather for automotive use.

An oligomeric composition containing oligomers and at least one stabilizing component is provided. An aqueous dispersion composition containing the oligomeric composition is useful for treating tanned leather to provide leather with increased softness or strength. Also provided are a method of treating tanned leather using the composition and an article containing the treated leather.

Composition and method for preparing leather

Provided are improved coatings, polymeric dispersions, and polymeric composites, which include crosslinked polymeric nanoparticles (hereafter 'PNPs'). Also provided are methods for forming improved coatings, polymeric dispersions, and polymeric composites, which include PNPs. The PNPs have polymerized units of at least one multi-ethylenically-unsaturated monomer have a mean diameter of from 1 to 50 nanometers. PNPs having polymerized units of at least one multi-ethylenically-unsaturated monomer and at least one surface-active monomer are also provided.

Coating and coating composition

A method of preparing an aqueous composition for treating leather comprises adding a predetermined amount of a solid particulate leather treatment composition directly into a predetermined amount of water in a vessel at a tannery; and dissolving or dispersing said solid particulate composition in said water. The solid particulate composition comprises 0.1 wt % or more based on the total weight of said particulate composition of a particulate hygroscopic material. The solid particulate composition is non-dusting in humid atmospheres.

Preparation of an aqueous composition for treating leather

A method of improving the strength, temper and water resistance of leather utilizing selected amphiphilic copolymers is provided. The amphiphilic copolymers are formed from a predominant amount of at least one hydrophobic monomer and a minor amount of at least one copolymerizable hydrophilic monomer. The method is particularly useful as a one step substitute for conventional retanning and fatliquoring treatment steps. In a preferred embodiment the amphiphilic copolymers also provide a significant degree of water resistance to the leather.
