Low hardness and scratch resistance in direct-cast diethylene glycol bis(allyl carbonate) (CR-39.RTM. plastic surface laminae in glass-plastic lenses are analyzed and new plastic formulations, preferably comprising the monomer catalyzed with a mixed isopropyl percarbonate-benzoyl peroxide polymerization catalyst, are disclosed, offering improved hardness and scratch resistance for laminated lenses and also for CR-39.RTM. plastic articles generally.

A method and apparatus for edge-grinding stressed laminated glass-plastic lens blanks wherein the lens blanks are heated during the abrasive edging process to reduce thermal stress breakage. The edged lenses are optionally etched to remove glass flaws, thus providing laminated lenses exhibiting improved resistance to thermal stress breakage in use.

A glass-plastic composite lens combining a glass element with a high-shrinkage thermosetting plastic is provided in accordance with a direct casting process comprising a consolidation heating step, subsequent to plastic curing and shrinkage, during which a thermoplastic coating between the glass element and the cured plastic bonds the assembly into a unitary low-stress composite.
