The method for charging an electrochemical nickel-based battery having a predetermined nominal capacity, including at least one measurement of the voltage of the battery and one measurement of the temperature representative of the battery. The battery is connected to an intermittent source of energy. The charging of the battery is stopped when the voltage measured at the terminals of the battery reaches a voltage threshold, depending on the measured temperature and representative of a capacity charged in the battery corresponding to a charging efficiency equal to or higher than 90% of the maximum charging efficiency.

Method for charging and method for determining an end-of-charge criterion of a nickel-based battery

A method for using a stand-alone system, provided with an actuator connected to a battery, comprises during a discharging phase of the battery at a predetermined current the measurement of a temperature representative of the battery temperature and the determination of a first voltage threshold depending upon the measured temperature. Then, a voltage is measured at the battery terminals. An operating mode, selected at least between a normal and deteriorated mode, is determined, said stand-alone system being in the normal operating mode when the measured voltage is higher than the first voltage threshold, and in the deteriorated operating mode when the measured voltage is lower that the first voltage threshold, the current provided by the battery during an actuation being reduced when going from the normal mode to the deteriorated mode.

Method for using a stand-alone system connected to a battery

The diagnostic method applies to a standalone system including a generator, a power regulator and a power storage element. The method includes comparison of the effective charging power or current of the power storage element respectively with a predefined power or current threshold. If the effective charging power or current is lower than said threshold, the power storage element is disconnected. An abnormal behavior is then detected either by comparing the effective charging power with the smaller of the values representative of the theoretical charging power of the power storage element and of the maximum power able to be delivered by the generator and comparing the effective and theoretical charging voltages, or by comparing the effective and theoretical charging currents.

The autonomous system comprises an intermittent power source delivering a direct current. A supercapacitance is connected in parallel with the battery and the power source respectively via a first switch and a second switch. Charging of the battery comprises pulsed current charging managed by a control circuit. During a current pulse, the amplitude of the current and the amplitude of the voltage increase at the terminals of the battery are measured. The dynamic internal resistance of the battery is determined from said amplitudes. A maximum acceptable current threshold is determined according to a maximum voltage threshold, to said dynamic internal resistance and to the no-load voltage at the battery terminals. At the next current pulse, the value of the charging current is limited by controlling the closing time of the second switch.

Method for pulsed charging of a battery in an autonomous system comprising a supercapacitance

The charging method comprises limiting, according to the temperature, of the power supplied to the storage element to a charging setpoint power. The energy required to charge the storage element is determined and the period during which the power resource will be available is estimated. A theoretical mean power is calculated by means of these two items of information. The progressions of the temperature and of a maximum acceptable power are estimated. A maximum energy able to be delivered by the generator is calculated from the maximum acceptable power. The value of the charging setpoint power is defined by comparison of the required energy with the maximum energy and by comparison of the mean power with the maximum acceptable power.
