A composite material and a method of using the composite material. The composite material consists of at least 65 volume percent cubic boron nitride (cBN) grains dispersed in a binder matrix, the binder matrix comprising a plurality of microstructures bonded to the cBN grains and a plurality of intermediate regions between the cBN grains; the microstructures comprising nitride or boron compound of a metal; and the intermediate regions including a silicide phase containing the metal chemically bonded with silicon; in which the content of the silicide phase is 2 to 6 weight percent of the composite material, and in which the cBN grains have a mean size of 0.2 to 20 &#x3bc;m.

A method of manufacturing a polycrystalline abrasive construction comprises providing a plurality of particles of a superhard material, the particles coated with a first matrix precursor material, providing a plurality of second matrix precursor particles having an average size less than 2 micron, the second matrix precursor particles including a liquid phase sintering agent, mixing together the plurality of particles of superhard material with particles of the second matrix precursor material and consolidating and sintering the particles of superhard material and the particles of matrix precursor material. A polycrystalline abrasive construction comprises a particles of a superhard material dispersed in a matrix material comprising a material derived from a liquid phase sintering aid and chemical barrier particles having an average particle size of less than 100 nm dispersed in the matrix. Greater than 50% of the chemical barrier particles are located substantially at boundaries between superhard particles and the matrix.

Polycrystalline abrasive constructions

A method of manufacturing polycrystalline abrasive elements consisting of micron, sub-micron or nano-sized ultrahard abrasives dispersed in micron, sub-micron or nano-sized matrix materials. A plurality of ultrahard abrasive particles having vitreophilic surfaces are coated with a matrix precursor material in a refined colloidal process and then treated to render them suitable for sintering. The matrix precursor material can be converted to an oxide, nitride, carbide, oxynitride, oxycarbide, or carbonitride, or an elemental form thereof. The coated ultrahard abrasive particles are consolidated and sintered at a pressure and temperature at which they are crystallographically or thermodynamically stable.

Polycrystalline abrasive compacts

A polycrystalline diamond (PCD) composite compact elementcomprising a substrate, a PCD structurebonded to the substrate, and a bond material in the form of a bond layerbonding the PCD structureto the substrate; the PCD structurebeing thermally stable and having a mean Young's modulus of at least about 800 GPa, the PCD structurehaving an interstitial mean free path of at least about 0.05 microns and at most about 1.5 microns; the standard deviation of the mean free path being at least about 0.05 microns and at most about 1.5 microns. Embodiments of the PCD composite compact element may be for a tool for cutting, milling, grinding, drilling, earth boring, rock drilling or other abrasive applications, such as the cutting and machining of metal.

Polycrystalline diamond composite compact elements and tools incorporating same

PCBN material consisting of cBN grains dispersed in a matrix, the content of the cBN grains being in the range of about 35 to about 70 volume % of the PCBN material. The matrix comprises at least one kind of chemical compound that includes aluminum (Al) and at least one kind of chemical compound that includes titanium (Ti). The size distribution of the cBN grains exposed at a surface of the PCBN material is such that at least about 50% percent of the total equivalent circle area (ECA) arises from cBN intercept lengths up to 5 microns. At least about 20 percent of the total ECA arises from cBN intercept lengths greater than about 5 microns.

Polycrystalline abrasive materials and method of manufacture

A method for making a polycrystalline diamond (PCD) construction comprises providing a cemented carbide substrate comprising carbide grains cemented together by a cement material, subjecting the substrate to a first pressure treatment, treating the substrate to remove at least some of the cement material from at least a region of the substrate adjacent a boundary defined by the substrate, and subjecting the substrate to a second pressure treatment, in contact with or bonded at the boundary to a diamondiferous structure.

Polycrystalline diamond

The invention provides for an ultra hard or hard composite material comprising a primary ultra hard or hard particulate material and at least one secondary ultra hard or hard particulate material dispersed in a matrix material. The primary ultra hard or hard particulate material has a thermal expansion coefficient lower than that of the matrix material and the at least one secondary ultra hard or hard particulate material has a thermal expansion coefficient greater than that of the matrix material.

Ultra hard/hard composite materials

A method of coating ultrahard abrasive particles having vitreophilic surfaces, or treated to render their surfaces vitreophilic, are coated with an oxide precursor material, which is then heat treated to dry and purify the coats. The heat treated, coated ultrahard abrasive particles are further treated to convert the coats to an oxide, nitride, carbide, oxynitride, oxycarbide, or carbonitride thereof, or an elemental form thereof, or a glass.
