A segmented pulley transmission with an actuator system is disclosed. The actuator system comprises: an engaging deflector radially movable between first active and idle positions; a disengaging deflector radially movable between second active and idle positions; and a motivator assembly for moving the engaging and disengaging deflectors between the active and idle positions. In the first active position, the engaging deflector is configured to move a plurality of pulley segments of the segmented pulley transmission from a disengaged region to an engaged region during rotational operation of the segmented pulley transmission. In the second active position, the disengaging deflector is configured to move the plurality of pulley segments from the engaged region to the disengaged region during rotational operation. In the first and second idle positions respectively, the engaging deflector and the disengaging deflector do not move the plurality of pulley segments during rotational operation of the segmented pulley transmission.

Segmented pulley transmission and actuator system for the same

A transmission is provided comprising: a first pulley assembly rotatable about a first axis; a second pulley assembly rotatable about a second axis; an endless member coupling the first pulley assembly and the second pulley assembly; an idler pulley engaging the endless member and rotatable about an idler axis, the idler pulley being movable between a first position and a second position; a tensioner assembly coupled to the idler pulley, configured to control tension in the endless member and comprising: a tensioner spring having a spring axis and biasing the idler pulley towards the second position; and a tensioner arm rotatable about a tensioner axis and coupling the tensioner spring to the idler pulley, the tensioner arm defining a spring linkage extending between the tensioner axis and a spring coupling point, wherein a spring angle is defined between the spring axis and the spring linkage.

A receiving disk for a segmented pulley transmission is provided. The receiving disk comprises: a generally circular body having a pulley facing side and a rear side, opposite the pulley facing side; at least one mating feature located at the pulley facing side of the body, the mating feature being configured to engage a complimentary mating feature, which is secured to a pulley segment of the segmented pulley transmission, when the pulley segment is in an engaged region; and at least one securing feature located in proximity to the mating feature and configured to secure the complimentary mating feature, when the complimentary mating feature is engaged with the mating feature. A segmented pulley transmission comprising the receiving disk is further provided.

An actuator system for moving a plurality of pulley segments of a segmented pulley between an engaged region and a disengaged region is provided. The actuator system comprises: a deflector configured to rotate at least between a first position and a second position; and a plurality of followers, each of the followers comprising a protrusion configured to engage the deflector to move the respective one of the pulley segments between the engaged region and the disengaged region, wherein the deflector is configured to move between the first position and the second position to selectively engage the plurality of followers and direct each of the followers between an engaged position and a disengaged position, to move the plurality of pulley segments between the engaged region and the disengaged region. A segmented pulley transmission comprising the actuator system is further provided.

Actuator system and segmented pulley transmission including the same

A segmented pulley defining an outer peripheral surface for engaging an endless member of a segmented pulley transmission is provided. The segmented pulley comprises: a plurality of pulley segments configured to be sequentially movable between an engaged region and a disengaged region to transition the endless member between the segmented pulley and a concentric pulley in the segmented pulley transmission, each of the pulley segments having a body defining a portion of the outer peripheral surface. The plurality of pulley segments includes a transition segment having an integrated support extending from the body of the transition segment, the integrated support being configured to support the endless member when transitioning the endless member between the segmented pulley and the adjacent pulley in the segmented pulley transmission. A segmented pulley transmission comprising the segmented pulley is further provided.

Segmented pulley and segmented pulley transmission including the same

A pulley assembly () for engaging an endless member () includes a first pulley (), a second pulley () and at least one transition segment set () comprising one or more transition segments () that are independently movable between an engaged region and a disengaged region to transition the endless member () between the first pulley () and the second pulley (). An actuator system () includes a support structure (), an actuator subassembly () secured to the support structure () and a stator (). The actuator subassembly () includes a follower () and a sled (), which is movable in a circumferential direction between an advanced position and a retreated position, in response to an electromotive force generated on the sled () by the stator (). The follower engages the cam surface () of the sled () to move in an axial direction between an extended position and a retracted position as the sled () moves between the advanced and retreated positions.

Pulley assembly for a segmented pulley transmission and actuator system for the same

A key pulley segment in a synchronized, segmentally interchanging pulley transmission system is either first or last in a pulley segment set to engage an endless member. The first or last key segment teeth to engage or disengage, respectively, are shortened or completely trimmed, and the adjacent pulley segment to the key segment is elongated such that the inward portion of the tooth profile extends toward the key segment. Shortened tooth or teeth and an elongated adjacent segment together allow for many pulley segments to be designed as key segments. Completely trimmed teeth may be engineered to create a supporting surface for the endless member on the key segment. The elongated adjacent segment may have an extending portion which slidably mates with the supporting surface of the key segment, thereby receiving radial support therefrom. Multiple pulley segments from different pulley segment sets may be connected or constructed to move together in a unified stack, and may be staggered such that any one segment may be in an engaging position with the endless member when the unified stack is moved along the axis of rotation. Unified stacks may have guiding rails on both inner and outer radial surfaces, and the pulley assembly may have mating features that receive such guiding rails. Any number of the pulley segments in a unified stack may be key pulley segments. Pulley segments of a stack may be vertically separated into one or more unified stacks. Unified stacks may be moved by way of a cam or roller cam system, where each unified stack has a slidably or ratably attached roller and roller-arm. Chassis-mounted cams engage the rollers outside of the contact zone, rollers and roller-arms are moved into and out of engagement with the cams, and individual segments of a unified stack are moved into or out of engagement. Rollers may be actuated into and out of engagement by electromagnets, fixable mounted in an array. Rollers may discretely engage with multiple cams, by way of several electromagnet-arrays, and thereby complete several stack axial motions. Electromagnets in an array may be selectively energized to move selected rollers to an active position in order to effect key pulley segment engagement, stack axial movement and transition.

Key pulley segment features, segment stack configuration, and cam and roller design and actuation in a synchronized segmentally interchanging pulley transmission system

A segmented pulley transmission is provided. A pulley assembly is rotationally mounted on an axle. The pulley assembly includes a core pulley having a first set of mating features on a peripheral surface thereof. A pulley segment set comprises a number of pulley segments slidably mounted in the pulley assembly and arranged in a ring concentric with the core pulley. The pulley segments are individually actuatable out of the pulley assembly into an engaging position and into the pulley assembly into a non-engaging position. The pulley segments have a second set of mating features on an peripheral surface matching the first set of mating features. An endless drive member has corresponding mating features on an inside surface for engaging the first and second sets of mating features of the core pulley and the pulley segments in an engaging position. Contact between the endless drive member and a core pulley defines a contact zone. An actuator actuates the pulley segments between the engaging and non-engaging positions when the pulley segments are outside of the contact zone. One of the key pulley segments in the pulley segment set is a key pulley segment that is positioned relative to the core pulley such that when the key pulley segment is actuated to the engaging position and rotated into the contact zone, the corresponding mating features of the endless drive member engage the first set of mating features of the core pulley and the second set of mating features of the key pulley segment without the introduction of significant slack or tension.
