The present invention relates to the use and to a process involving at least one calix[n]arene derivative substituted by at least one acid functional group on the upper face and at least one aliphatic chain of variable length on the other face, as an additive for crystallization of a polar and/or positively charged molecule. The use and the process of the present invention have the advantage of enabling, facilitating and/or accelerating the crystallization of polar and/or positively charged molecules, especially of membrane proteins that are in solution or soluble, which had previously proved to be very difficult.

The present invention relates to a method for selectively extracting membrane proteins using at least one calixarene of formula (I). The use of calixarenes in the method according to the invention enables the selective solubilization of the membrane proteins while preserving the three-dimensional structure that is essential to the enzymatic activity thereof.

A water dispersible colloidal system in the form of generally spherical matrix type particles and of sizes typically in the range of from 50 to 500 nm, called nanoparticles, and a process for the preparation of such systems. The system is characterized in that the nanoparticles comprise at least one amphiphilically modified calixarene. The water dispersion contains at least one active component such as a cosmetic, a pharmaceutical compound or other biologically active substances, foods, beverages, etc. enclosed within the nanoparticles, in the outer aqueous phase, or in both. The systems show outstanding properties, especially long-life stability even at elevated la temperatures.
