A device for retaining a graft on an artery, comprising a first part for contacting the graft and a second part for contacting the artery when the device is pierced radially through the graft and the artery wall, the first and second parts being connected by a resilient member, wherein the resilient member biases the first and second parts towards each other into a retaining configuration such that in use the artery and the graft are retained together between the first and second parts of the device, and wherein the first and second parts are moveable into an open configuration in which they are further apart than in the retaining configuration to enable the device to be conveyed along an artery.

Devices and methods for the repair of arteries

A stent for occluding the human ductus arteriosus comprises a length of wire of shape memory effect or superelastic material which is expandable from a relatively straightened state for introduction into the patient to an occluding state wherein the wire defines an occluding anchor part and a spiral anchor part and a straight linking part connecting the two wherein the wire has a series of turns extending over the cross-sectional area of the occluding anchor part.

A tubular graft/stent includes a tubular sheath () having at intervals along its length a plurality of ring-like rigid members (), which are attached to the sheath around their respective circumferences and are made of a shape memory material, so that when the members () change shape the sheath () adopts a new cross section in conformity with them along its whole length. The members may be discontinuous to allow the adoption of a contracted shape in the martensitic phase and an expanded shape in the austenitic phase. A graft may also have a side tube () which can be inverted so as to be housed within the sheath.

Surgical graft/stent system

A tubular graft/stent comprises a tubular sheath having at intervals along its length a plurality of ring-like rigid members, which are attached to the sheath around their respective circumferences and are made of a shape memory material, so that when the members change shape the sheath adopts a new cross section in conformity with the members along the sheath's whole length. The members may be discontinuous to allow the adoption of a contracted shape in the martensitic phase and an expanded shape in the austenitic phase. A graft may also have a branched side tube which can be inverted so as to be housed within the sheath.

An expandable device, e.g. a stent for insertion into a passage, e.g. a blood vessel or artery, is disclosed. The device has a body ( ) formed of a flexible material. The body is convertible from a collapsed condition in which it is of a size to be inserted into the passage into an expanded condition in which the body ( ) is fixed relative to the passage. A passage ( ) is provided within the body so as to extend over at least a region of the latter. An inlet ( ) is provided in the body ( ) in communication with the passage therein. Method of producing a surgical implant

A method of storing information on a material (preferably a shape memory alloy), including the step of heating a plurality of crystals of said material in order to effect a structural change in each said crystal, wherein the information stored on said material is encoded in the arrangement of changed and unchanged crystals. Preferably the structural change is a geometrical change in the crystals such as from rhomboidal to body-centered cubic. A method of reading information from such a material is provided, including the steps of scanning the surface of the material using an electron beam or a laser, analyzing the reflected electron beam or laser light, and decoding the information.
