A rotary vessel for a filter assembly is rotatably mountable in a housing of the filter assembly and has a body having an open end, a cover receivable on the body to close the open end, and a releasable locking device that is manually operable to selectively lock and unlock the cover relative to the body.

There is provided a filter sub-assembly that comprises a rotary vessel having a rotor body and a closure member to close an opening of the rotor body. The sub-assembly further comprises a liner that is receivable within the rotor body to line an inner surface thereof. The liner is also fluidly sealable to the closure member by a centrifugal force directed radially outwardly from an axis of rotation, about which the rotary vessel is rotatable. The sub-assembly has particular application in a centrifugal filter of a motor vehicle, for example for cleaning engine oil in an engine lubrication system.

A liner for a filter sub-assembly has a wall having an outermost surface and an innermost surface. The innermost surface bounds a cavity extending between opposing first and second ends of the liner. A portion of the outermost surface is textured. The liner may be used in a rotor of a filter assembly.

A rotary vessel for a filter assembly has a rotor body rotatable about an axis of rotation and a spigot with a non-circular cross-section and integral with or coupled to the rotor body. The spigot extends away from the rotor body along the axis of rotation and engages with a bearing. The spigot facilitates transfer of rotary motion between the rotor body and the bearing. A filter assembly has a housing with a main body and a closure member separably attachable to the main body. The rotary vessel is disposed inside the housing. The closure member retains the rotary vessel inside the housing and is separable from the main body to permit removal of the rotary vessel from the housing. The spigot integral with or coupled to the rotor vessel engages with a bearing of the filter assembly to rotatably support the rotary vessel in the housing.

A rotary vessel for a filter assembly has a rotor body rotatable about an axis of rotation and a spigot, integral or coupled with the rotor body, extending away from the rotary body along the axis of rotation. The spigot has an abutment surface against which, in use, a cooperating surface of the filter assembly abuts to inhibit movement of the rotary vessel relative to the cooperating surface and parallel to the axis of rotation. The filter assembly has a housing with main body and closure member separably attachable to the main body. The closure member retains the rotary vessel inside the housing and is separable from the main body to permit removal of the rotary vessel from the housing. A connector releasably couples the closure member to the rotary vessel such that the rotary vessel is removable from the housing by separating closure member and main body.

A liner for a filter sub-assembly has a wall having an innermost surface that bounds a cavity extending between opposing first and second ends of the liner. The wall has a deflected portion extending into the cavity and delimiting an opening. The liner may be used in a rotor of a filter assembly.

A filter assembly has a housing with a housing inlet and a drain. A rotary vessel is rotatably mounted within the housing and has a rotary vessel inlet and a rotary vessel outlet. Fluid exiting the rotary vessel outlet exits the housing through the drain. A valve assembly moveable between a closed and an open configuration is provided. When closed, the valve assembly fluid-tightly seals rotary vessel inlet from housing inlet. When open, the rotary vessel inlet is in fluid communication with the housing inlet such that fluid flowing into the housing inlet passes into the rotary vessel inlet. The valve assembly is moveable from closed to open configuration when a pressure of fluid flowing into the housing inlet exceeds a threshold pressure. The filter assembly has a fluid passageway permitting air flow into the rotary vessel through the rotary vessel inlet when the valve assembly is closed.

A centrifugal separator is provided with a base and a substantially vertical spindle upstanding from the base. A rotary vessel is mounted on the spindle. A housing is connected to the base and encloses the rotary vessel. A liquid supply duct supplies a liquid to be filtered to the rotary vessel. The rotary vessel has an open top and an upper edge at the open top. The rotary vessel is provided with a filter material and has a weir arranged at the upper edge, wherein the filter material extends upwardly to the weir. The housing has a passageway adjacent to the weir and the passage way communicates with the weir to enable discharge of waste material that is contained in the liquid to be filtered and does not pass through the filter material during supply of liquid to be filtered to the rotary vessel and rotation of the rotary vessel.

Self-cleaning centrifugal separator

A filtration apparatus has a housing that has a main housing body and a base closure member. The base closure member is releasably attached to the main housing body, wherein the housing defines an enclosed space. A filter element is disposed in the enclosed space. The housing has a fluid inlet and a fluid outlet. The base closure member has a peripheral channel extending about an entire periphery of the base closure member, wherein the peripheral channel is in communication with the fluid inlet or the fluid outlet of the housing. The base closure member has a fluid inlet passage and/or a fluid outlet passage communicating with the peripheral channel and communicating with the filter element.

Filtration apparatus

A separation cone () is mounted into the interior chamber of a centrifugal separator rotor (), which comprises a cover () releasably connected to a base (), in order to provide a frusto-conical wall subdividing the chamber into upper and lower regions. This slows the passage of fluid from the upper to the lower region, which takes place via openings () and/or via a gap between the inner rim () of the cone () and the axial inlet tube (). The separation cone () is connected to the cover () by a releasable snap fit arrangement, such as by deflectable tabs () around the periphery of the separation cone () engaging into a groove () around the interior surface adjacent a lower edge of the cover (). This allows there to be a predetermined sequence of servicing operations and ensures that the separation cone () will reliably stay with the cover () when the cover is removed.

To enable centrifugal filtration of fluids which contain abrasive contaminant particles the rotor bearings () must be isolated from the fluid which passes into and through the rotor chamber (). This is achieved by a design in which the spindle () is connected to the rotor so as to rotate in unison with the rotor () relative to the base (). The bearings () for the spindle () are provided in a bearing housing () which is fixedly mounted to the base () and a sealing arrangement, preferably a spring-loaded axial seal (), is provided between the spindle () and the base () at a location below the bearings () in the bearing housing ().

A shuttle valve () is provided in the axial bore () of a stationary spindle () through which fluid is supplied to a rotor () of a centrifugal separator to close off the fluid outlets () to the rotor () automatically upon removal of the cap () or cover assembly () in the event that fluid supply has not been switched off.

The invention describes a self-powered centrifugal separator comprising a base, a rotor mounted on an operably substantially vertical axis for rotation thereabout by reaction to fluid emission from rotor nozzles therein, a housing mounted on the base and enclosing the rotor, a sump formed in the base below the rotor, a fluid passageway through the base extending from an inlet port to an outlet port and including a diversion port to supply fluid to the interior of the rotor by way of the rotation axis, a drain passage in the base for draining fluid from the sump to the fluid passageway, and a venturi arrangement provided in the fluid passageway in the base to develop suction pressure to draw fluid from the drainage passage into the fluid passageway, whereas a spring loaded valve body is provided in the fluid passageway, said body being configured and arranged to shut off supply of fluid to the interior of the rotor when pressure of fluid entering the inlet port falls below a predetermined minimum pressure value and also to restrict and/or shut off supply of fluid to the interior of the rotor when pressure of fluid entering the inlet port rises above a second predetermined pressure value.
